Several people shot at BET Awards Party

Post By RelatedRelated Post

ABC News recently claimed that a “shadow has been placed over the BET Awards.”  A person was killed right before the show, and four others were injured during an incident that has embarrassed the company that has been often criticized for promoting violent music at the expense of the black community.

An overnight party held early Sunday in East Hollywood was to promote the awards show.  There was one gunman, who is still at-large, according to police.  Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department says that the shooting took place at 5:17 am.

The shooter shot several rounds at party-goers and three victims were taken to the hospital.  One person died on the way.   The shootings took place at Monalizza, a restaurant and banquet hall.

The event “was like an after-party even though the awards are tonight,” Madison said.

BET said in a statement.

“The network and all organizers will continue to maintain a safe environment for all planned activities,” the company said.

The rapper Drake was set to perform at the show, but is not going to attend.  Beyonce will also not be attending. There is no word as to whether or not the violence has anything to do with their decisions.

There are many who’ve criticized the BET Awards and the network for glamorizing the popularity of black-on-black crime by promoting artists like Lil Wayne, who’ve become wealthy rapping about death in the black community.  But until today, the violence has typically stayed in poor urban neighborhoods.  This is the first time that violence of this scale has seeped into the higher echelons of entertainment.

What do you think?  Does BET’s promotion of violent music have nothing to do with the outcomes at this party?  If they were promoting other forms of music, would the shootings be just as likely?

  1. When a white gunman goes into a school or a shopping mall to kill in mass, when the dust settles, the complete focus is on the life of that killer and what went wrong with him. They look at his family life, his friends, his school life… They dissect everything about him and figure out what they can do to change things in the future. But when black people get shot up in mass, the blame automatically goes on other black people in general. It’s not an individual pulling the trigger, it’s all of black America pulling the trigger. It’s Lil’ Wayne’s fault. It’s Rick Ross’ fault. It’s BET’s fault. It’s Richard Sherman’s fault. Even though at this point we know nothing about this killer. We don’t even have to find him. The black community has already been tried and found guilty of shooting up the BET Awards party.

It is extremely dangerous for us to get comfortable with the idea of blaming a group or some abstract ideas for the actions of one individual. Rap music didn’t pull the trigger Saturday night. a crazy maniac pulled the trigger. How come 99% of the people can listen to little Wayne and never kill anybody but the whole of people who listen to his music get defined by the one killer (and that’s ASSUMING the killer is a fan of his music?) No other genre of music has that burden. no other group of people carry that burden of the race but black people.

If we continue to artificially connect killers and sociopaths to the whole of black people, we will continuously be villified and pushed to the margins of society. Stop giving criminals an easy out allowing them to blame their crimes on rap music. We are only helping our enemies legitimize their prejudices when we continue to link crimes against black people with rap music. Black people were victims of violent crimes long before rap music and BET.

  2. A few punks who can't fight, throws shade on the whole culture of hip hop. SAD!!

  3. Johnson is a businessman. Cant blame him for selling out. The persons to blame for the exploitation are the people that profit, support and view BET or support the New NAACP.

  4. It's pure ignorance. We can't blame our ignorance on white people all the time. I don't care who brought the guns into the neighborhood it's up to us to make the decision whether or not and when to use the weapon. It sickens me that we always want to blame white folks for just about everything when this is our problem. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying, I do agree with what brother Khalid is saying 100% as far as BET not belonging to blacks and the white man promoting the violence we put out. Yes white folks promote our violence because they are just out to make a buck on our hate for self. But we as a people should stop blaming black on black crime on the white man. This is a problem where some of us need to take a good look at who's in our households and start understanding why are our Luved ones constantly killing one another. One of the problems we have is that we are not taking responsibility for our own faults.

  5. We blacks need to abandon this Jew and other whites BET, and all other channels and producers of this RAP CRAP, which is nothing but degradation and filth, that is ruining black people. And especially our young blacks. And these Jews and other whites who are promoting it, and now own BET, are deliberately pushing this garbage. And we need to tell them to get out of our lives, and out of our youth’s lives, and take this filthy music that they want our young people to listen to and practice after. Or we start picketing and protesting these evil crackers. And tell Barbra Lee to get to stepping too, because she is nothing but a puppet on a chain of the Viacom crackers and Jews, known as the children of the devil. (John 8:44) — Rev. George Brooks

  6. This would never happen at a Country Music Awards show; or an awards show for Jazz or Blues.

  7. Who is your reseaech team? You wonder if violence is the reason that Beyonce didn’t show? Anyone over the age of 12 knows that she and Jay are on tour. You or your research team could have easily found out that they had a show last night (Google is your friend) and was never scheduled to attend the awards in person. Im gonna unsubscribe, I cant follow a blogger that knows less about whats going than I do.

  8. Reciting mantras while meditating is believed to be one of the most powerful forms of meditation.

  9. No, sir it is the result of grown folks not being able to resolve issues without violence. It is the fault of the coward with the knife who chose to imprison himself because he could not walk away if it's self defense than I guess I stand corrected. But I rather walk away from an argument alive than to stand my ground and say oh I'm not getting punked because a dead punked person still is a loser regardless.

  10. Nope, it can't be blamed on corporation if some people do not know how to behave when their in a gathering than they need to stay their immature azz home. Most of us do not want to be around all that nonsense I know I don't I hate to see anyone fighting regardless of color. I don't know what happen to the love some of us had for each other and our culture always some sad stuff coming out of our communities. When will we know peace in our culture.

  16. This is sad…

  17. so very sad. The Award shows has Really Changed over the years i found myself fast fowarding half the show. years ago, i would have been GLUED! to the Tv Commercials in all. but a Shooting at the Pre-party/after party is Ludicris. why can’t we all just get along.

  18. The point is very simple. Yes, the event was blasted because this is what they glorify. Unfortunately, people have not grown up and realized that this is not the thing to do. People attending the awards do not respect themselves enough to come correct, dress correct and remain correct which is another reason why you have the characters we’ve observed.
If we were to pay attention to life and respected it the way it should be done, then half of us wouldn’t attend these functions half naked and talking trash plus taking it to heart as some of the immatured so-called men do. It behooves me to see these so call rappers talk, “diss” but can’t accept a few words and thus they have to act out because, “their feelings’ have gotten hurt. It’s so sickening but alas, this is what happens when you have so many of us who do not know “Black History”. I mean real history.
Have they ever heard of “sticks and stones” may break my bones but names can NEVER hurt me? My goodness, they need to act like it. Jesus. Speaking of Jesus, they really need Him.

  19. BET was decadent when Bob Johnson owned it as well. I am all about the eradication of white supremecy but we need to do some serious self introspection.
