The remaining members of TLC, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, are speaking out about the provocative way Rihanna dresses. Riianna recently stirred things up by wearing a see through dress to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. Rihanna was awarded with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award. The award is given to a person whose style has significantly influenced popular culture on an international level. CFDA CEO Steven Kolb made a statement about Rihanna winning the award and said, “We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.”
In her acceptance speech, Rihanna stated that growing up in Barbados, “I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion. Fashion has always been my defense mechanism…I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion. There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken.”
Despite what may have been good intentions by the CFDA and Rihanna, the media and many celebrities do not feel that Rihanna’s barely clothed nakedness that exposed her nipples and backside was appropriate.
T-Boz and Chilli were among those who felt it was inappropriate, and they voiced their concern in an interview with an Australian media station. T-Boz directed her comments at Rihanna stating: “Every time I see you, you don’t have to be naked. It’s hard for us to say anything because anytime we do, they say, ‘Oh TLC must be jealous,’ but I call a spade a spade.” Chilli voice her opinion as well stating: “We became the biggest selling group of all time with our clothes on and that says a lot. We could go around too with booby cakes out all day long.”
Rihanna did not respond to the women’s comments directly but instead made a Twitter post stating: “When there’s not changing the fact that I’m me, and they’re well…they’re them.”
They all make valid points, and with fans of both TLC and Rihanna becoming involved, the contention between them may just be heating up.
