Things could’ve ended badly for the young students riding on a Louisiana school bus last week, but that didn’t happen thanks to the actions of a quick thinking teen.
When a female bus driver tried to get a 15 year old student to stop spιtting on cars and throwing things, the misbehaving student came up behind the bus driver and hit her in the head so hard he knocked her unconscious.
With no one at the wheel, the school bus began rolling out of control. Tay’Veon Slaughter, 14, took matters into his own hands and took over the wheel and pressed on the brakes, bringing the bus to a stop.
Although Slaughter is being heralded as a hero, the teen says he was just doing what he had to do.
“I knew I had to stop the bus because, you know, she’s not responding,” he told local affiliate WAFB, referencing the female driver. “The bus was speeding up. So I knew if we get into a wreck, all of us would have been hurt.”
Slaughter says the misbehaving teen, who fled the scene after knocking the bus driver unconscious, became angry at the driver for telling him to sit down.
The driver stopped the bus in an attempt to get the misbehaving student under control, but after the teen knocked her unconscious, the bus began moving again.
The 15 year old suspect was turned in by his mother and has been charged with assaυlt and battery for attacking the 26 year old bus driver.
School officials confirm that the teen has been suspended and faces expulsion.
The injured driver, who says she did not know she’d been punched, was taken to the hospital and later released.
The quick thinking teen says what he did was nothing special.
“I had to do what I had to do,” Slaughter said.
