In a stunning move, special prosecutor Mark Piepmeier has announced that none of the cops responsible for shooting John Crawford III to death inside an Ohio Wal-Mart in August will be indicted. The grand jury considered charges of murder, reckless homicide and negligent homicide. The white officers who shot and killed Crawford were Officer Sean Williams and Sargeant David Darkow. Williams has stated that he shot Crawford for not complying with his command to drop the toy gun he was holding.
As promised, video from surveillance cameras were released during a press conference held to make the announcement. In the video provided, Crawford is seen holding a BB gun that was for sale at the store. At no point in the video is he seen pointing the rifle at anyone.
Ronald Ritchie, who called police claiming Crawford was pointing the gun at other shoppers, has recanted the story he told dispatchers. There is currently no word on whether or not Ritchie will be charged for making exaggerated and/or false claims about Crawford’s actions. This is the third time in the past five years that an Ohio grand jury has made the decision not to indict police officers who were responsible for shooting someone under highly questionable circumstances according to WHIO.
Crawford’s family, who were on the phone with him when he was shot, are requesting that federal authorities investigate the case. They feel that race played a role in his shooting and that it was in no way justified. They also feel that he may not have heard officers commands to drop the BB gun he was holding since he was on the phone. President of the Dayton Unit NAACP Derrick Foward echoed the family’s sentiments stating, “The Special Grand Jury in Greene County made the wrong decision. It’s a sad day in the history of Dayton. We will be calling for a full and complete investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.”
The Ohio Student Association is also calling for the Department of Justice to open an independent investigation. The group organized an 11-mile march called Journey for Justice for today that started at the Wal-Mart where Crawford was shot and ended at the courthouse where the grand jury was deliberating.
