NBC Dallas-Fort Worth affiliate, Channel 5, is reporting that a group has formed to protect Dallas, Texas residents from police. The group is calling themselves the Huey P. Newton Gun Club and is being led by Charles Goodson. While Goodson reports that the events that have unfolded in the last two weeks in Ferguson, Missouri regarding the shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown is part of the reason the group formed. He states that what has happened in Ferguson is not an isolated incident, and the group’s website points out that Dallas, “police have murdered over 70 unarmed individuals, most of the black and brown men, over the last ten years.”
Leader Huby Freeman points out that part of the groups mission is to educate residents on both their need and their right to bear arms. Freeman states, “We think that all black people have the right to self defense and self determination. We believe we can police ourselves and bring security to our community, ridding our community of black-on-black crime, violence, police terror, etc., etc..” In exercising their right to bear arms, Freeman joined dozens of people on a march along streets named after the civil rights leaders Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in which many participants carried rifles.
David Harrison was one of the participants in the march. Harrison’s mentally ill brother was killed by police in Dallas just a couple of months ago when he was shot six times, two of those which were in the back. During the march, participants stopped in Elaine’s Restaurant where the Dallas police lieutenant and deputy chief were dining. March participants placed their guns on the table while they ordered food and drinks, and officers were reportedly respectful of demonstrators.
In an official statement regarding the march, the Dallas Police Department stated that they support, “the constitutional rights of all.” The Huey P. Newton Club is hoping that the march provided a good example to residents of how they can “take up arms and join future patrols.”

I'm happy to see this article and it's been long over due when you have to draw the line in the sand which don't work but this will and clear message rings loud and true. Years before Wesley Snipes arrest he too was forming a club that was in the same light as this but was barred, beside the protection we have to educate the law to our people that officer must cite the violation you're being arrested for instead of walking up on you an telling you put your hands behind your back and detain is unlawful when your violation is not read and Maranda rights not read. This is by it self has been ignored in courts and we shall hold the judges accountable for civil rights violation something NAACP -Al Sharpton -Jesse Jackson have not sort to overturn one more thing the lawyer in Ferguson suing is the type of support we need to keep the city honest not these white legal sell out and black one too they know who they are should be name and called out so we don't get these sell out for defence.
This is a good step in the right direction… We have to know our rights and be able to express these rights when approached by police. Our confidence level will increase once educated but we must be mindful that some law enfocement officers may still ignore our rights.
I have said this for almost ten years that black people must depend on ourselves in terms of protecting our love ones and our community from police terror and violence in general. I can only hope that more black people will start their own citizen patrols in predominately black communities because this is the ONLY way police brutality will decrease.
We need to have this in all our Community. Our children has A right to be SAFE. not only from the Police, Also from those in the Community who are DESTROYING it. No one is going to save US But US.
It may backfire because seeing a rother with arms even if legal they can say he pointed it at them
Remember, if you don’t KNOW your RIGHTS you don’t have any! Knowledge is POWER and INFORMATION is CONTROL. To not know is to invite abuse. Ignorance is truly EVIL! Police have no duty to protect you. That’s why you have the Second Amendment to protect, not give, that RIGHT. See the case, Bowers v. Devito, 686 F.2d 616.
No Keith kysel. It will not backfire. Maybe some people hope it will. We will take back our streets from Black on Black crime. We will protect young brothers from being murdered by police and then going on vacation with their family. We will come together like we did before drugs and guns were dumped into our neighborhoods. Hopefully we will start doing BLACK OUT DAYS where we only buy from Black business owners. Hopefully this will spread nationwide. Citizen Patrols need to spread to every city across this country…AND I HOPE IT WILL!!
With the escalating violence on the Black community, this move was (is) inevitable! There's just so much a people will stand for, before they stand up and say, "No More!" if white militia can arm themselves to fight off unwanted government "over reach" then we certainly have the right to protect ourselves from police who treat us like a foriegn entity! I wish them much success!
They better be careful they don’t get shot themselves. The police will always find an excuse to get away with murder
