Yolanda Spivey conducted a personal experiment that got the attention of the world. She says that after being jobless for a long period of time and getting no offers, she chose to pull the wool over her potential employers’ eyes. Yolanda changed her name to Bianca White and pretended to be a white woman.
After making this cosmetic change to her name and resume, she found that the companies suddenly saw her to be a viable employment option. Even though her credentials were the same, she says that Bianca received a ton of phone calls, while Yolanda was getting nothing. Her experiment went viral and everyone took notice.
Workplace discrimination is rampant in black America, but no one seems to care. This experiment shows that things might not be as clear cut as some people want to believe.
Discrimination is real.
This experiment, and countless others prove it.
Maybe our politicians should do something about it, the same way they would help gay Americans or others who are being faced with this kind of mistreatment.

I don't have a "Black" name… just credentials. I usually do get turned down AFTER I'm seen. I believe this article. Folks can say we're needlessly complaining all they want but the discrimination is very real…
It's 2014, and we're still doing studies on some pretty obvious stuff that is 150 years old next year. Too bad it took a Black man being elected President for "some" folks to get it.
Me too. They would see my name and hear my voice, I guess they thought I was white over the phone — because as soon as I walked in the door, their entire attitudes and level of enthusiasm dropped immediately. Before I had a chance to get my mouth open.
What can you say?
This is the prime reason..why black people should support black people. We cant even employ our own people. As a personal rule, I refuse to bad mouth black people in public..we can get plenty of that from others..why punish each other further.
A white male acquaintance recently told me that he applied to a company for employment. He was interviewed and told that he would definitely be hired, however he was informed that the hiring procedure required that all applicants apply online. He was advised by the interviewer that he should submit his application online (so as not to arouse suspicion) and that he would be "selected" even if other applicants were better qualified. He did, and he was hired.
I can see how someone can be discriminated because of their name when applying for a job bit how can a potential employer discriminate against someone who is gay unless the question is asked.

It happens. It use to happen to me all the time because my name sounds white and I sound white over the phone, I would get all kinds of offers and interviews. The min. I walked in the door suddenly that position was filled, or they were trying to offer me less money that they advertised the position for. It is very real Angie.
Cathy… I was referring to the comment about being discrimated when a gay person applies for a job. How can a potential employer know someone is gay from an application form?
Face the fact, this is old news ….
Where have you all been? it seems as if each generation that comes into the marketplace just did not get it from the generation before.
We are brain washed by images.
The worse part is …… Not only did I have to change my voice etc. for interview but did get the job on occassion. The worse is from my own people, this Black man, thought I was not only non white, but my voice turned him on and when I arrived, he really was obviously shocked that I was not the image he had in his mind.
It was a bad day.
Another observation. I own a business, I have more Black people turning down my business, do not support me and lie to me more than any other race of people. I have more spanish, white, asians in my business and less then several Black People. Why? we all march together on the street, we can get half naked together in a Brooklyn parade
We can fry fish and eat food and get fat together and buy from the very people who are trying to slowly rid of your life! but do not support a business of a Black person. Something i wrong with the Brain of the African American.
And you get upset because the Nigerians cannot stand you. WHY?
Just because we have a BLACK president does not mean that racism that is stoned into the heart has disappeared into the air.
We need help! And only the person in the mirror can CHANGE the WORLD
Yes! This is something that needs to be addressed! Why are we getting turned down or ignored when we send our resumes to companies and then get sent off after an interview? Its all some racial bullshit!
Oh I missed that. However, not to sound discriminating, but you can tell if someone is gay by observation. Not in all instances, but in a lot of them you can tell.
