Broadway actress and singer, Idina Menzel, ex-wife of actor Taye Diggs, has just announced that she is engaged to fellow actor Aaron Lohr, who just happened to have starred with them in the film adaptation of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical Rent.
Menzel met Diggs during her first paying job as an actress – on the set of the original production of Rent. They went on to marry in January of 2003 with Menzel later giving birth to their son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, in September of 2009. Four years later, it was reported that Diggs and Menzel had separated after 10 years of marriage. The separation led to a divorce, which was finalized in December of 2014.
Diggs told DailyMail.com, “’I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I thought, “Oh, man, people are going to trip out [if we split]. Maybe they thought it was cute that we met in Rent.” Menzel also talked about the divorce, telling People.com, “You try not to be so hard on yourself, “ she continued, “You have a lot of regret with a child, feeling like you’re failing them in some way and not giving them the idealistic scenario.”
Menzel first rose to prominence by reprising her role as Maureen Johnson in the screen adaptation of the original Broadway musical Rent. She went on to originate the role of Elphaba in the hit Broadway musical Wicked, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Those not familiar with her Broadway endeavors will know her better as Shelby Corcoran in the hit musical comedy-drama televisions series Glee, as well voicing the characters Nancy and Queen Elsa in Disney films Enchanted and Frozen, respectively. A song featured in Frozen entitled, “Let It Go” earned the film (and Menzel) an Academy award and a Grammy, with the song also reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Not long after their divorce, Menzel began dating fellow actor, Aaron Lohr, appearing together publicly at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. Lohr, who can be considered an MVP of the Disney stable, has appeared in classic Disney films such as The Mighty Ducks, Newsies, and A Goofy Movie. A year and a half after the divorce, Lohr proposed to Menzel, and the rest is history!
Menzel announced the engagement on Twitter last Friday, “As if this week couldn’t get any better I have wonderful news … my man and I are engaged! We are so happy. It’s a beautiful time.”
