Karl Malone: Time for Black People to ‘Stop Looking for a Handout’

Whenever racial controversy ensues, there are always at least a few black Karl Malonecelebrities waiting in the wings to blame black people for the problems they face.

Charles Barkley is probably the celebrity most well known for making harsh criticisms of the black community, but NBA legend Karl Malone recently threw his name into the category of wealthy blacks who blame blacks for not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

Appearing on HuffPost Live on Wednesday, Karl Malone made it clear that he’s in agreement with Charles Barkley.

“I echo his sentiments exactly,” Malone told host Marc Lamont Hill. “We need to look in the mirror ourselves and stop waiting on someone to come march on our behalf. Take ownership ourself, make our community better and stop looking for a handout. Do something about it yourself that you can control.”

Malone never addressed systemic racism in his comments, but strongly criticized blacks for using racism as an excuse.

“Stop using the excuse about race,” Malone said. “I am sick and tired that every time you turn around, that’s what we dangle … Our problem now is we do so much talking and beating things to death. Let’s take ownership in ourselves … stop waiting for someone to come in and march for us.”

If you’ll recall, Charles Barkley said that black culture is the crux of the black community’s problem.

“There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success,” Barkley said. “It’s best to knock a successful black person down ’cause they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s crabs in a barrel. … We’re the only ethnic group that says, ‘hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.’ “

  1. Someone drank the white supremacy kool-aide and went back for seconds and thirds. There are over 30 million Black people in this country! The majority of Black people are law abiding; not in prison; educated; do not have a criminal record, and are not on welfare!
