Despite the New York Giants losing a 31-28 heartbreaker to the Dallas Cowboys, Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’s 43 yard touchdown catch is cause to celebrate. With Beckham using just his thumb and two fingers, he made what many are calling the catch the greatest catch ever. With New York football not generating much for fans to talk about, Beckham’s catch is a welcome distraction.
The catch happened during the first play of the second quarter Sunday night. The Giants were on the Cowboys 43-yard line on first-and-10, when Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw the ball to Beckham. Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr grabbed and held Beckham as he tried to make the catch, but Beckham would not allow Carr to stop him. He reached up with his right hand, grabbing the ball with one hand as he leaned back.
NBC announcer Al Michaels described it as, “incredible,” and fellow commentator Cris Collinsworth exclaimed, “Put that to music! That is absolutely impossible what he just did! That may be the greatest catch I’ve ever seen in my life!” Fans and fellow NFL players took to Twitter to express their awe regarding the catch. Indianpolis Colts’ cornerback Vontae Davis tweeted, “Wow. What a catch. #Respect.” Eddi Roayl of the San Diego Chargers’ and Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers’ both referred to it as the “catch of the year.” NBA player LeBron James even commented on Twitter, stating, “Man I just witnessed the greatest catch ever possibly by Odell Beckham Jr! WOW!!!!”
Beckham was a 2014 first round pick from LSU. During his senior year in high school, he caught 50 passes for 1,010 yards and 19 touchdowns. His high school nickname was, “Go-Go Gadget hands.” He seems to have shown the world why he earned that nickname. Beckham finished the game with 10 catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
