According to the Lincoln Journal Star, the administration at Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) in Nebraska doesn’t like their teachers distinguishing between male and female students using gender-specific terms because it might make transgender students uncomfortable.
The district would much prefer that their teachers use terms like “you guys” or “hey campers,” instead of “boys and girls” or “ladies and gentlemen” because it will help homosëxual or transgender students feel more welcome. They apparently don’t care if the heterosëxual students are confused as to why they can’t be recognized by their gender.
LPS is even handing out leaflets to their teachers in the aim of helping them become more understanding of “different” students’ needs and they plan to hold a board meeting on October 14 to discuss these issues, according to parent Rachel Terry. She adds that she intends to attend the meeting and encourages other parents to do likewise, to show the board that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and just plain ridiculous.
Several of the outlines handed to teachers have been prepared by an organization named Gender Spectrum. One of their handouts is titled “12 Easy Steps On the Way to Gender Inclusiveness” and is now available to view online.
Gender Spectrum advises teachers “Don’t use phrases such as ‘boys and girls,’ ‘you guys,’ ‘ladies and gentlemen,’ and similarly gendered expressions to get kids’ attention.” It continues, “Instead, say things like ‘calling all readers,’ or ‘hey campers’ or ‘could all of the athletes come here.’ Create classroom names and then ask all of the ‘purple penguins’ to meet at the rug.”
Brenda Leggiardo, LPS coordinator of social workers and counselors, said that the agenda is not designed to confuse children or teachers but to help all children succeed. She added that families struggle enough to understand their child’s transgender issues without making it worse by having teachers who are uninformed and unsupportive.
However, Terry believes that this is a gross misuse of taxpayer’s money to promote LGBT issues. Instead of focusing on educating the children, the LPS administration has chosen to train teachers about social re-engineering. The ones who will ultimately pay the price for their decision will be the children, she adds.
