Rep. Cummings Says Blacks View Secret Service as Racist

On an episode of Sunday’s “Face the Nation”, Congressman Elijah Cummings said that many Obama and Secret Serviceblack people sense racism behind the recent lapses by the Secret Service.

Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, says he doesn’t agree with the view that race plays a role in the president’s protection.

“Eighty-five percent of all the African-Americans that come to me mention what you just said, and I don’t agree with it,” he said. “Let me tell you why. We have information that this goes all the way back to the Bush administration — a lot of the problems that we’re talking about now. It’s just that they’re coming to light.”

As was previously reported, an intruder with a knife made it past Secret Service and into the East Room of the White House. Agents were unable to stop unstable Iraqi veteran Omar Gonzales as he climbed the fence and ran through unlocked doors into the White House.

The Washington Post also reported that bullets struck President Obama’s private residence but weren’t noticed by Secret Service until days later. And on last week we learned that the Secret Service allowed an armed contractor with a criminal record on the elevator with Obama.

Also reported last week was an incident where a man pretending to be a U.S. Congressman was allowed backstage near Obama during an event. According to Bloomberg, the man posed as Congressman Donald Payne Jr. in order to get closer to Pres. Obama during Congressional Black Caucus weekend.

The series of blunders led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson.

“The job of directing the Secret Service and instituting deep culture reforms does not bring to mind an agency veteran—such as Pierson—whose background is heavy with administrative or human resource roles,” POLITICO reported. “Those experiences tend to make the person reflexively defensive and unresponsive to legitimate outside criticism of the organization and its members and punitive with insiders who dare to buck the system even in pursuit of needed reforms.”
