Police Lt. Shawn Williams was placed on leave after his department discovered the video on the officer’s computer.
In the video Williams is heard encouraging his daughter to take part in the racist antics and using racial slurs.
The video is being investigated by Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Plants and CPD’s Professional Standards Division, but in an unprofessional twist to this story, Police Chief Brent Webster blasted the prosecutor’s intelligence and said he should just back off and let police handle the investigation.
“Mark Plants is not smart enough, when the negative light is cast in another direction, to stay out of that negative light,” Jones said, according to Charleston Gazette. “He just has to involve himself in something that has nothing to do with him.”
“We are investigating this. The Charleston Police is going to handle this. We don’t condone any kind of activity that is being alleged.”
In a statement released on Thursday, Plants said it is his obligation to get involved: “Any time a law enforcement officer is under an investigation for misconduct, the reliability of their testimony is an issue.”
Some in the community believe things between the prosecutor’s office and police have gotten personal since Plants is now married to the ex-wife of a Charleston police detective, a story which was gossiped about in that community.
