Atlanta Hawks Cancel Meeting With Civil Rights Leaders

Hawks brass unexpectedly canceled a meeting with civil rights leaders, causing some who’dAtlanta leaders been scheduled to attend the meeting on Wednesday to take offense.

Hawks CEO Steve Koonin reportedly asked that the meeting be postponed to a later date.

Rev. Markel Hutchins said the meeting was canceled “at the last minute.”

The cancellation came just days after racially inflammatory comments made by Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson and general manager Danny Ferry.

In an email discussing Hawks games operations, Levenson discussed how having too many blacks at games was scaring away white sports fans.

“Regarding game ops, i need to start with some background. for the first couple of years we owned the team, i didn’t much focus on game ops. then one day a light bulb went off. when digging into why our season ticket base is so small, i was told it is because we can’t get 35-55 white males and corporations to buy season tixs and they are the primary demo for season tickets around the league,” Levenson said in the email. Then he noted the following:

it’s 70 pct black

— the cheerleaders are black

— the music is hip hop

— at the bars it’s 90 pct black

— there are few fathers and sons at the games

— we are doing after game concerts to attract more fans and the concerts are either hip hop or gospel.

Levenson also acknowledged that racist fans are part of the problem.

“My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant season ticket base. Please dont get me wrong. There was nothing threatening going on in the arean back then. i never felt uncomfortable, but i think southern whites simply were not comfortable being in an arena or at a bar where they were in the minority. On fan sites i would read comments about how dangerous it is around philips yet in our 9 years, i don’t know of a mugging or even a pick pocket incident. This was just racist garbage. When I hear some people saying the arena is in the wrong place I think it is code for there are too many blacks at the games.”

Levenson is on his way out due to the email.

  1. I’m not gonna call this owner racist but I see him more of a business man and BUSINESS WISE he was making very valid points. What race has predominantly more money and influence? White people. Yes, Atlanta has some very influential and rich African Americans but the article said the owner said it wasn’t ENOUGH to make the money they needed to make “so where are the white people?” Oh…scared of being the only white one a room (stadium) full of blacks. It is exactly what the article said; “racist garbage” that still has white people in fear of black people. This is the south. This is the red state of Georgia so this topic at a business meeting does not surprise me one bit. This right here proves the power in the “almighty dollar” and black people should definitely become those businesses that the owner was looking for. Like I said, this is the south and racism is still live and active and unfortunately it weighs very heavy in the southern business. Just my opinion.

  2. I think the OWNERS, should get rid of the BLACKS, on the team and, see what they end up with, no PLAYERS, that can even win a game PERIOD. Always willing to blame Blacks, for everthing in PLANET.
