According to relatives, Jeffery Daniels, 37, beαt Craig Wilson with brass knυckles and then shοt him in the stomach on Friday because Wilson invited his mixed race grandchildren over for a sleepover.
Wilson knew there was animosity brewing after he found a cross burning in his yard not long ago.
Daniels was charged with aggravated assaυlt and released on $20,000 bond. Wilson remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Relatives say the problems began when Daniels and his son ran into Wilson’s home while yelling racial slurs. Daniels was irate that Wilson’s mixed race grandchildren were being allowed to stay overnight at the home. Wilson’s daughter is white and has children with a black man.
Wilson and Daniels argued, then Daniels pulled out a pair of brass knuckles and beαt Wilson, then shοt him.
The victim’s sister, Julie Wilson, wants the men charged with a hate crime.
“Yes they called him some severe names and then they told him to leave and they chased him off his porch around his house and beαt him with brass knuckles and shοt him with his own gun,” she told local affiliate WTOC.
Ms. Wilson also said that her brother had been threαtened over his mixed race grandchildren prior to the incident.
“He (Daniels) told everybody that he would die for his children and to him the grandchildren are like his and he almost paid the price this weekend,” she said.
Police say the racial attack cannot be characterized as a hate crime because the victim is white.
“That’s the way I read the law,” Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton told The Clarion-Ledger.
“I told my assistant district attorney that the law is very clear that the victim has to be a different race in order for it to be a hate crime.”
