TD Jakes: The Shame of Black Consumerism

Bishop T.D. Jakes refers to himself as a “ministerial and business visionary, entrepreneurial trailblazer, altruistic philanthropist, and spiritual shepherd to millions.”  He was born in South Charleston, West Virginia and credits his parents with teaching him a sense of integrity and self-reliance.  Jakes felt called to the ministry at a young age and preached part-time while attending West Virginia State University.

In 1982, Jakes began pastoring the Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith, which only had around ten members.  Under his leadership, the church grew quickly, and the church was eventually relocated to Charleston.  In the early 90s, Jakes started his notable classes “Woman, Thou Art Loosed,” and “Manpower.”  He also began the television ministry “Get Ready.”  In 1996, after founding T.D. Jakes Ministries, Jakes moved the church again to Dallas, Texas and renamed the church The Potter’s House.  The congregation has since grown to around 14,000 members.

For his work as a preacher, musician and teacher, Jakes has received a number of honors, including 13 honorary degrees and doctorates.   His gospel album “Live at The Potter’s House” was nominated for both Grammy and Dove Awards.  Jakes has also appeared on the cover of Time magazine with the headline alluding to the fact that Jakes may be the next Billy Graham.  PBS Religion and Ethics Newsweekly also named Jakes as one of the country’s “Top 10 Religious Leaders.”

Jakes has written a number of books, and in addition to leading the congregation at The Potter’s House, he also travels the world preaching and teaching.  His services and sermons are also regularly broadcast on “The Potter’s Touch” which runs on Trinity Broadcasting Network.

In the following video, Jakes discusses why black people need to focus on being producers.  Check it out to see why he feels that black people should not take pride in only being consumers.

  3. I would like to add to not only do we need to stop being HATERS but we need to stop being SE;F RIGHTEOUS.

  4. About time…its been long over due…what he is saying has been said by many like The Hon. Marcus Garvey, The Hon. Elijah Muhammad etc…its past time for preachers like Jakes to step up and get with the economic nationalist movement for African Americans and people of African descent!!!

  5. I have problem with TJ & other large church leaders that did not t
here influence/Leverage/contacts/$/ to further the growth & development of Black own businesses, and stood by& watch the decling of black owners of business since the growth of the 70's & early 80's,? Sure there own image,& churchg grew, but for the most part there focus was only there,as a urban & businesscounsultant development

  6. For most of my life, working in that field ,with hundreds of churches with the exception of a few, I was & is very disappointed with there leadership toward supporting self ownership, I was very happy when Malcolm's vision change somewhat to include his vision in this direction (after returning

  7. From me a)my vision to promote black ownership & to incur age support was a lonely effort for years,

  8. where’s the “shame” part?! a lot of canned biographical words, but little depth on the topic…

  9. TD Jakes and others like him are part of the problem!

  10. The prosperity minister is lamenting black consumerism that seems like and oxymoron.
How does it work that the wealth and notoriety you receive from the church you then promote yourself and catapult you and your family into another economic level beyond that of your parishioners your family.. Church has become the family business.I guess these are new Christians that do not adhere to the new Testament.

  11. YEAH YEAH YEAH ALL HE'S SAYIN IS TRUE BUT THING IS WHY WON'T HE PARTNER UP WITH THE NATION OF ISLAM OR DR CLAUDE ANDERSON AND HIS PLAN? IF HE'S THAT SERIOUS ABOUT HELPIN BLACK FOLK IN AMERIKKKA THEN THAT'S WHAT HE'LL DO INSTEAD OF ONLY SPEAKING THE TRUTH BUT NOT ACTING ON IT. BLACK FOLK IS F'D UP HERE AND THE ONLY WAY WE'RE GONNA GET OUTTA THIS MESS IS WITH ALL HANDS ON DECK AND NOT JUST GIVING LIP SERVICE.

  12. Religious is a choice! Doing business is also,an athis can do so?

  13. I disagree with you do to the fact that people such as yourself and others are not looking at the whole picture. First of all, it appears that African-Americans such as yourself and ones like you are not looking at the simple math. If I am overseer of an organization which consists of 50 million people, and those 50 million people each give me a dollar, then I will have $50 million dollars easily. Now, if I choose participate in a lot of bling, bling and not provide different programs to help the people who give me those millions, then that's another thing. Also, I never hear you and others like you talk about the ministers of other races who have African-American members in their congregation who are a worth a lot more than Bishop T. D. Jakes, Dr. Creflo Dollar, Dr. Fred Price and any other African-American man of God you want too mention. How much money do you think Joel Osteen pulls into Lakewood Stadium in Texas, Billy Graham (whom I was told used too be a bigot), Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland just too name a few.

Some of the main African-Americans who make these complaints are the very one who go to these churches to get monies for their unnecessary habits, never return and never give anything back. Not thinking that those monies could have been giving to someone in the congregation who supports the church. Also, our people talk about our ministers, but fail to talk about how many fatherless children the African-American churches have assisted. A lot of these "single" mothers do not spread the "good news" of how these ministers have help saved them and their fatherless children from being put out of their dwelling places, or the homes these churches have helped them to purchase. Oh yea, the African-American women don't want to woman up on that, do they? Some of these same women end up pregnant again by the same irresponsible person! Let's look at the whole picture brother! Let's call out both parties! Peace.

  14. A lot of us African-Americans are guilty of mismanaging our money, that's really the initial problem!

  15. Like I have stated before, a lot of our women in these very same churches are telling you how much help they are getting from these ministers. Especially when they come their with their stomachs full with baby(ies) not knowing who or where the person who impregnated them, but yet expecting the church to take on the full load just because it is the house of God. God forbid. That's called pimping the church too, you know!
