An Oklahoma teen who went on a missionary trip to Kenya is accused of rαping and mοlesting several children while there. The teenager now faces life in prison for alleged crimes he committed during his trip.
Matthew Durham, 19, confessed to rαping several young girls and forcing young boys to perform οral sεx on him, reports KTLA 5.
“This is a young man in our community that made choices to exploit children in an orphanage,” said United States Attorney Sanford Coats. “It’s a true tragedy all the way around.”
This wasn’t Durham’s first trip oversees, but this time “Durham requested to stay at the children’s home in an ‘overflow bunk’ rather than at an offsite facility,” according to the complaint.
“The victims are believed to be both boys and girls between the ages of four and nine, at least one of whom is HIV positive,” the criminal complaint concludes. The children reportedly range in ages from 4 to 10.
Several victims told authorities that Durham “often touched them in a sεxual manner or told them to touch themselves while he watched.”
Someone at the school alerted authorities to Durham’s crimes. When confronted, Durham reportedly broke down and confessed.
“A caretaker at the orphanage noticed something wasn’t right and confronted Mr. Durham. He admitted to some of the acts,” said Coats.
Prosecutors confirm that Durham can be convicted here even though his alleged crimes happened outside of U.S. borders.
According to attorney Adam R. Banner, he’s being charged with:
- traveling with intent to engage in illicit sεxual conduct (one count)
- engaging in illicit sεxual conduct in foreign places (two counts)
- attempt and conspiracy (three counts)
- aggrαvated sεxual abuse with children (four counts)
Durham was arrested on July 17 and is being held without bond.
