During the CNN segment, Don Lemon asked Collier what prompted him to write the column titled “The Nιgger in the White House” to which Collier replied “a great many people in the United States continue to think of President Obama as the nιgger.”
Lemon said he understood the point, but still wondered why the “N” word was only in the title and not the article, making it look as if the title was just used by Collier to get attention.
Collier insisted that the title was appropriate for an article explaining that “racism exists in the United States and there’s no getting around it.”
The publisher knew ahead of time that the headline would be controversial and tried to frame the conversation early on.
“[The author] Jim Collier is a straight talking man so when a few months ago he wanted to use the word ‘nιgger’ in an article to shock us into accepting that there still are people who believe and use this outrageous word, our editorial staff took collective objection and we did not print it,” read an introduction to the article by editor and publisher George Capsis.
In the article, the author wrote that staunchly conservatives disapprove of Obama solely because he’s black.
“It is possible to draw only one conclusion: these far right voters hate Obama because he is black,” the author explained. “The simple truth is that there is still in America an irreducible measure of racism. A large minority have for some six years have been quietly angry that they must have in the White House a member of an inferior class of people.”
