President Obama has received his share of criticism regarding the illegal immigration crisis that has unfolded in recent months, but the source of recent disdain may be surprising to some. Rather than coming from Republican conservatives, Obama is being criticized by black people who are from the Southside of Chicago, which is where Obama worked as a community organizer before getting into politics. According to the Washington Times, video has surfaced from a protest held in Chicago regarding the recent rash of shootings over the Fourth of July weekend that saw 9-14 people killed and more than 60 injured.
Residents specifically took issue with Obama’s request for $3.7 billion to address the border crisis. One resident stated, “With the president setting aside all these funds for immigrants and forsaking the African American community and African American families, I think that’s a disgrace. And Barack is from the heart of 55th in the City of Chicago. He will probably go down as the worst president ever elected. Bill Clinton was the African American president.”
A woman present at the protest went on to address her comments specifically to Obama stating, “Mr. President, we’re asking for you,” one woman said. “You’re spending billions of dollars in Texas, but we’ve a problem here in Chicago. We will not stand by this here, and keep letting this senseless killing and shooting happen in our community.” Another resident even called for Obama’s resignation stating, “President Barack needs to pay attention to Chicago, if he can not pay attention to Chicago and the African American community, he needs to resign.”
Perhaps one of the most condemning statements made was a resident comparing the state of the African American community to conditions that existed during slavery: “Today, if you look at the time that we were brought here as slaves 400 years ago, we got the same results today.”
This is not the first time African Americans have spoken out about the border crisis or the harm that amnesty could cause to black people and black neighborhoods. Black protestors from Murietta, California, where illegal immigrants are being shipped from the border, have also expressed their disapproval. One woman stated, “It’s just too much…We already have our own poor people. Starvation, kids walking with no shoes…We don’t need other people’s kids to bring more problems…We’re already in debt as it is.”
Although it is still unclear what Obama will do to solve the border crisis, one thing that is clear is that Democratic politicians are disregarding the concerns and needs of black Americans to address the needs of foreigners. U.S Commission on Civil Rights member Peter Kirsanow has consistently spoke up about the fact that allowing amnesty will increase competition for low-skilled jobs that are largely worked by African Americans. The National Review’s Jeff Sessions has pointed out that immigration rates from 1980 to 2000 have led to a 7.4 percent reduction in wages for low-skilled workers. Although the Democratic party has largely built its brand around being a party that works to protect the interests of the black community, it now appears as though many Democrats are setting this approach aside in favor of wooing a new and growing population of illegal immigrants that may, if granted amnesty, be able to bring larger numbers of votes.
