Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan remains in critical condition, but his publicist is reporting that he is becoming more responsive.  According to a report on ABC News, doctors and family members are taking this as an encouraging sign.

Morgan was injured in a chain reaction wreck early Saturday.  Middlesex County prosecutors report that the crash occurred around 1 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike.  A tractor trailer failed to slow for traffic and rammed into the limousine bus Morgan was riding in, causing the vehicle to overturn.   The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing to investigate the accident.

The truck driver responsible for causing the accident, Kevin Roper, has been charged by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.  He turned himself in and was released after posting a $50,000 bail.

Morgan’s injuries include broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken leg, and a broken femur.  Two others who were riding with Morgan, his assistant Jeff Millea and Ardie Fuqua, also remain in critical condition.  James McNair, a comedian who is known as Jimmy Mac and was also one of Morgan’s writers, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  Four other vehicles were involved in the accident, but none of the occupants were injured.

Morgan is expected to face a long road to recovery and will likely remain in the hospital for several weeks.

Morgan appeared as a regular on “Saturday Night Live” from 1996 to 2003.  He went on to star as an exaggerated version of himself in the sitcom “30 Rock” from 2006 to the show’s end in 2013.  He received an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for that role.

At the time of the accident, Morgan was returning from a Friday night performance of a comedy tour act at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware.
