This situation may sound like a “Seinfeld” episode called “The over-reach,” but it really happened. And it involves the most powerful man in the world; yet, Twitter followers are not amused.
Even “The Today Show” weighed in, with host Matt Lauer dubbing it “Sneezegate.”
The “controversy” stems from a seemingly innocuous photo of President Barack Obama ordering at a Chipotle in front of a line of curious onlookers, according to reports.
White House photographer Pete Souza tweeted the photo out when the president stopped at the popular Mexican food chain in Washington D.C. on Monday. The photo shows Obama leaning over the guard to point out which ingredients he wanted in his burrito bowl.
“Pres Obama orders his burrito bowl at a Chipotle today before lunch with participants in the working families summit,” Souza tweeted.
Twitter quickly fired back about today’s social conventions and sanitation, which apparently include not crossing the glass barrier, which is meant to guard the food from errant sneezes by customers.
“Sir, don’t put your finger in the food,” one tweet said in response.
“Wow rude you can’t reach over the glass,” another said.
“He’s doing a big no no,” came another.
“I got yelled at when my hand just grazed past the glass,” another said.
And so it went, going viral with nearly 500 retweets and hundreds of comments accusing the President of bad manners and a classic over-reach, to the point Lauer got into the act on the popular morning show.
“This is sneezegate,” Lauer said. “Apparently the president has very particular toppings when it comes to burrito bowl requirements, but he may be guilty of a different kind of over-reach here.”
