The missing 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell V, of Detroit, has been found alive in his father’s basement. Bothuell had been missing since June 14th, and authorities had even begun to explore the possibility of a homicide being responsible for the child’s disappearance.
The news of Bothuell being found broke while the the boys father was completing an interview on HLN with Nancy Grace. Upon being told that his son had been found in his basement, Mr. Bothuell appeared stunned and confused and struggled to form a sentence. When Grace questioned Mr. Bothuell about whether or not the home’s basement had been checked previously, Mr. Bothuell stated that the FBI and police had checked the basement. Authorities report having checked the home four times, including once with a cadaver dog.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig reports that the boy was found hiding behind a makeshift barrier of boxes. Craig also reports that he does not believe the boy constructed the barrier himself and that he was discovered with bedding nearby. He had been reported missing after taking a break from a workout and not returning. Craig stated, “In 37 years of policing, I will tell you, I’ve never seen anything quite like this. But the outcome, I couldn’t be happier.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case to determine if there was any abuse involved. However, authorities stated that the boy appeared to be fine and would be medically evaluated. The 12-year old had been living with his father and stepmother and had previously ran away but was found after three days. In regards to his son being found, Mr. Bothuell stated, “I’m shocked. I looked. The Detroit police looked. The FBI looked. To imply that I knew my son was in the basement is absurd. I thought my son was dead.”
