Actor Marlon Wayans acted like he didn’t know much about Africa in an ill-advised attempt at geographic humor during his recent stint as the host of the 2014 MTV African Music Awards.
The reviews are in and they aren’t kind.
Wayans’ jokes focused on obvious stereotypes like distance runners and the wildlife. He rode onto the stage in a rickshaw and then mispronounced cultural names. He even made an attempt to turn his ignorance into a joke about being a clueless American reporter that fell flat with several African writers and commentators.
ThisIsAfrica.com, blasted Wayans, suggesting that maybe his ignorance wasn’t all that much of an act, according to madamnoire.com.
They chalked his performance up to “Another American hits African soil without much clue about where they are landing,” the site reports.
In addition to mispronouncing words like Nairobi, ThisIsAftica said the comedian “…trundled out crappy stereotype after insult – telling the audience that he’d seen butts that made Kim Kardashian look like Miley Cyrus, going on about how many marathons Africans win and getting in jokes about cannibalism, clicking languages and how he might have fυcked a lion the night before.”
Nigerian R&B singer, Banky Wellington joined several others who took to Twitter to express their displeasure over Wayans’ performance.
ThisIsAfrica just chalked Marlon’s offensive performance to apathy. “The man is not stupid, which implies that the skimpiness of his performance and the wealth of stereotypes was just because he wasn’t bothered about what impression he made,” the site reads.
Wayans’ performance as host marred what madamnoire.com called “a beautiful showcase of the talent located on the continent… Musicians Nigeria’s Davido and Tiwa Savage won best male and female artist and South Africa’s own Mafikizolo took home the award for best group.”
