Born a male, but now a woman, Laverne Cοx, best known for playing Sophia Burset in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” is on May 2014’s cover of TIME magazine, along with the caption “The Transgender Tipping Point: America’s Next Civil Rights Frontier.”
The Mobile, Alabama born Cοx, who has a twin brother, is a prime example of how the world has changed its views of those who don’t like the way they were born. These individuals can simply change their gender through operations and hormone medications.
In an interview with TIME, the transgender “woman” who received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for advocacy in the transgender community from GLAAD, talked openly about the new status of transgender people.
According to Cοx, she grew up in a household without a father figure and never knew him, so there were just the three of them, Cοx, her twin brother, and her mother. Cοx adds that very early in life, she knew that things would be different because she wanted to do things that little girls would do.
Cοx goes on to say that she was bullied at school and made fun of because of her “girlish” ways. She adds that one particular bullying instance stands out in memory is when a group of four or five school band members held her down and beat her with their drumsticks.
However, a lot has changed since those days, according to Cοx. She adds that since more transgender people have come out to declare their feelings, the public has shown a lot more acceptance of their lifestyle.
Part of the reason for the acceptance of the transgender community can be attributed to social media and the Internet, adds Cοx. She continues “We’re being able to write our stories and we’re being able to talk back to the media … We are the reason. And we are setting the agenda in a different way.”
When asked by TIME if there was someone special at the moment, Cοx replied that yes, she was dating a guy, but it was hard because many men who date transgender women feel really guilty and shameful of that fact. She added that although she had dated many men, a lot of them didn’t want to be seen in public with her.
