We’ve all heard about strict judges who think nothing of finding attorneys in contempt of court, but there’s one judge in Brevard County, GA who has taken disobedience of his commands to a whole new level.
If you find yourself in the courtroom of Judge John Murphy and he tells you to sit down and be quiet, you better do what he says, or he might just take you outside for a beating, as he did with defense attorney Andrew Weinstock.
Weinstock had been reportedly disrespectful to Judge Murphy, who was quickly losing patience with the outspoken attorney.
In a video of the courtroom proceedings, you can hear Weinstock say to the judge, “You want to set it for docket sounding, set it for docket sounding. I’m not waiving in any case. This is an emergency created by the state.”
You can clearly see in the video that Murphy is losing his temper when he responds to Weinstock by telling him to sit down, shut up, and he will deal with the matter without his help. He adds that if he had a rock with him, he would throw it at the Weinstock.
Seemingly unaware that the incident might develop further, Weinstock doesn’t heed the Judge’s warning and continues arguing the point. He tells Murphy that he has every right to stand up and fight for the rights of his client because he is the public defender.
Murphy, growing increasingly impatient, has heard enough from the discourteous attorney and promptly tells him that if he doesn’t sit down and shut up, he will take him outside for a beating, if that’s what he wants.
According to public defender Blaise Trettis, the two men decided that they couldn’t settle their differences in court, so they went out in the hallway where a scuffle can be overheard on the video.
Trettis went on to say that Judge Murphy grabbed hold of Weinstock’s collar and began to punch him in the head before courtroom bailiffs intervened and stopped the one sided fight.
As if nothing had happened, Murphy calmly walked back into the courtroom and continued with the business at hand. He did, however, state to those present that it would take him a moment to catch his breath.
It doesn’t show on the video whether Weinstock returned to the courtroom, but it does show that those present thought the incident was entertainin, because they gave Murphy a round of applause.
