10. Patrice O Neal

Patrice O’Neal was hilarious. Its sad to see his star dim so early in life but the comedy he left behind will last forever. He didn’t have the mass appeal that the others on this list have but his distinct point of view and his honesty makes him one of the best kept “secrets” comedy had. His work also included television and he appeared on many hit TV shows including NBC’s The Office and Fox’s Arrested Development.

9. Chris Rock

Discovered by Eddie Murphy at the age of 18, Chris Rock has been one of the most successful comedians on this list. His ability to cross over into the mainstream audience is one to be admired. He was the forth African American to appear on Saturday Night Live where he made a name for himself. His current successes include stand up specials, several movies as well as producing and directing credits.
