Mass graves, internment camps, no compensation: The story of Black Wall Street

Post By RelatedRelated Post

Have you ever thought carefully or learned the real story of Black Wall Street?  The atrocities are countless, and the state of Oklahoma has yet to pay reparations.  In this interview, Dr Boyce Watkins speaks with an historian who tells the story in grave detail.  Scores of deaths, loss of businesses and even people of color being put in internment camps make up the story that is almost never told.

This community was doing better than the white community around it.   There were scores of black businesses destroyed during the massacre, which occurred after false charges were filed against a black man.  This led to lynch mobs, attacks by police, and even bombs being dropped by the national guard.  The military didn’t drop bombs on the white community that started the violence, but they readily bombed the African American community that had more to lose than the whites.

After finding their reason to attack, angry whites came and burned down this community that had millions of dollars in wealth.  Many proud doctors, lawyers and business owners were left homeless and were even unable to rebuild after the destruction was over.  The white community, after the massacre, created laws that made it nearly impossible for the black community to rebuild.  They actually required that all new buildings be built with a material that was inaccessible to the black people in town.

To this day, whites control Tulsa, Oklahoma and their grandchildren still control the assets that were stolen.  Maybe it’s time to revisit the idea of asking them to repay what was stolen from the black people in this community.  At least there should be an apology, do you think?

We should tell this story to our children out of respect for those who lost everything.  Oprah is going to tell the story soon, but we should also tell this story ourselves.

  1. Oh Mo, why do white people LET us live among them? The answer to that question is clear, no race can survive on it’s own. I know that it’s going to be difficult for you to fathom that concept. Every race brings something to the table, whether you believe it or not.

  2. Btw, my home was built by my grandfather…a master carpenter

  3. Oh poor MoSmallBrain, you are such a pathethic and disgusting little person, not qualified for manhood by any measure. Did you know there are FAR more “white” people on welfare of all kinds in America than “Black” people? You are amazingly full of misinformation and prejudice, and yet too stupid to even make any sense at all, e.g. saying you are against racial superiority. LOL. Again, you are a prime example of shame for me at having to share even the same country let alone the same “ethnicity and color”. You are the one who needs a land of your own like some kind of sub-human creature who shouldn’t be around other humans. I pity your family even more if you have one. And anyone else who has any face to face contact with you. Not to mention anyone whose livelihood is somehow tied to your peanut brain. You will self exterminate at this rate. Maybe in your next life you’ll be a different kind of worm that the kind you are now. Wow indeed.

    • The way he feels about blacks in this lifetime, it’s a sure bet that he’ll come back black in his “next life.”

Knowing what I know about how life works, I can only feel pity for Mo Big, or anyone who uses a handle of self-aggrandizement among his fellow humans, and believe that racial separation is the answer to what ails his life.

    Rosewood massacre

A black and white photograph of ashes from a burned building with several people standing nearby; trees in the distance

The remains of Sarah Carrier's house where two blacks and two whites were killed in Rosewood in January 1923

"The Rosewood massacre was a racially-motivated mob atrocity in Florida during January 1-7, 1923. In the violence at least six blacks and two whites were killed, and the town of Rosewood was abandoned and destroyed in what contemporary news reports characterized as a race riot. Racial disturbances were common during the early 20th century in the United States, reflecting the nation's rapid social changes. Florida had an especially high number of lynchings in the years before the massacre, including the well-publicized Perry race riot where a black man had been burned at the stake in December 1922.

"Rosewood was a quiet, primarily black, self-sufficient whistle stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Spurred by unsupported accusations that a white woman in nearby Sumner had been beaten and possibly raped by a black drifter, white men from nearby towns lynched a Rosewood resident. When black citizens defended themselves against further attack, several hundred whites combed the countryside hunting for black people and burned almost every structure in Rosewood. Survivors hid for several days in nearby swamps and were evacuated by train and car to larger towns. Although state and local authorities were aware of the violence, they made no arrests for the activities in Rosewood. The town was abandoned by black residents during the attacks. None ever returned."

    The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

"The U.S. government's 40-year experiment on black men with syphilis
or forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all."

    Bonus Marchers

"Bonus Marchers, in U.S. history, more than 20,000 veterans, most of them unemployed and in desperate financial straits, who, in the spring of 1932, spontaneously made their way to Washington, D.C. They demanded passage of a bill introduced by Representative Wright Patman providing for immediate payment of their World War I bonus. Calling themselves the Bonus Expeditionary Force, they camped in vacant government buildings and in open fields made available by police superintendent Pelham D. Glassford. The veterans conducted themselves in a peaceful and orderly way, but when the Senate defeated the Patman bill (June 17, 1932) the marchers refused to return home. On July 28, President Herbert Hoover ordered the army, under the command of Douglas MacArthur, to evict them forcibly. MacArthur had their camps set on fire, and the army drove the veterans from the city. Although Hoover ordered MacArthur's eviction stopped and was ignored by the general, the president was much criticized by the press and the general public for the severity of the government response."

  5. Darlene Coleman thank you

  6. @karen baylis: Karen, I can agree with you to a point, but to say that the Jews moved on is to misrepresent their actual behavior. Jews have a saying, "Never Again," realizing that unless they remain vigilant they could be, once again, the victims of a new holocaust, as anti-Jewish sentiments are still flourishing in this country and many parts of the world.

In addition, it's not fair to compare blacks with Jews. Jews never lost their language, their religion, their customs, or their traditions–the foundation of their solidarity and their cohesiveness as a people.

Blacks, on the other hand, were stripped of their racial identifiers, embracing Africa to be sure, but without a true knowledge of their homeland, or its various histories, as Africa is composed of many countries, many people, and many cultures and languages.

Jews have Israel, and Hebrew; Germans have Germany and it's language. Italians have Italy, and the Italian language. And on and on.

Blacks have slavery and years of oppression from which to build their cohesiveness, and to do so by using the language, customs, culture, and traditions of their oppressors. And this is not a sufficient base upon which to build.

I think blacks are doing remarkable well, given their history, and their continual status of less than always before them.
