In this video, Dr Boyce Watkins speaks about the importance of black people speaking up about toxic hip-hop music and harmful media. Dr Watkins explains that negative messages affect the thinknig of our children, and that the music only promotes the increased dysfunction that has occurred in black America over the last 40 years.

He mentions the War on Drugs and Mass Incarceration, but also discusses the struggles of the black community to help their children get messages from media that are going to empower them and not harm them.

Dr Boyce Watkins was the only African American in the world to earn a PhD in Finance during the year 2002.  He is also the author of “Commercialized hip-hop: The gospel of self-destruction.”  In this lecture series, Dr. Watkins explains the ways that corporate America has taken over hip-hop and pushed messages that are deliberately disruptive to the development of healthy black men and boys.

You can watch his video below and tell us:

Do you think that hip-hop music on the radio has gotten a little bit out of control?
