A Detroit teacher has been fired after cell phone video revealed that she used a broom to breαk up a fιght between students.

In the video, two Pershing High School students are seen fιghting  and knocking over desks before a teacher intervenes, using a broomstick to try and breαk up the fιght. She hιts one of the students in the back and that student backs off, only to be charged again by the other student. Eventually classmates breαk up the fιght.

Now the teacher who frantically tried to breαk up the fιght using a broom has lost her job since striking a child is considered child abυse.

Keith Johnson, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, which represents educators in Detroit Public School system, said the teacher was caught in an untenable position.

  1. Really the students need to be punished. We fired an educator! Really! She is suppose to teach a class of students; not become a referee in a brawl. Discipline starts at home!

  2. No wonder our kids are not learning. What qualified, dedicated, self respecting teacher would want to work for a school system that doesn't have her/his back!!!

  3. That 's wrong she should keep her job, when I was coming us teachers would kick your azz for fighting and disrupting the class room.

  4. Did she contact school security? I'm sorry shelost her position.

  5. This entire situation is utterly ridiculous. This is the outcome of having any type of zero tolerance rule in effect. Was the teacher wrong for using a broom? No. She wasn't using "corporate punishment", she was using a tool to try and regain order. In todays culture, teens revel in violence. Maybe this is why they 'enjoyed the fight' before deciding to help break it up. The mother statements clearly indicates to me her lack of compassion and empathy, in fact her attitude is pathetic. She should be teaching her son how to take responsibility for his actions, which he clearly does not. The teacher should not loose her job, but the school should be reprimanded for faulty equipment and for also not having a teachers aide for a sizeable student body. Peace

  6. It is so sad that in today's time, the educators are held more accountable than the students.

  7. The teacher should be reinstated and given a bonus, assuming this report is true and accurate. If the student she unintentionally hit was not the one who started the fight, then at most, the teacher should apologize to that student if the student wants such as apology. But this is clearly not child abuse. It would only be child abuse if she used the broom to hit a student for getting an answer to a question wrong.

  8. If she had walked out of the class to”get” security she still would have been been in trouble. If she had gotten in the middle, she could have been hurt. She was in a no win situation, and you wonder why people don’t want to teach.

  9. Oh shut up!!!

  10. This is not what suppose to happen. If two student are fighting and a teacher tried to keep one from hurting one another why fire the teacher? Some time their should be an exception to the rules when some one can get hurt. I guess she was suppose to sit and watch.

  11. Amen, amen, and amen again and again . . .

  12. How can you teach when there is no order, she might have used a broom ass a weapon but so many children are out of control. I don't think she knew what to do!!

  13. While teaching in Graduate school I had the opportunity to teach in an inner city school for a week. It was a war zone. The students were disrespectful, the environment was hostile, and not conducive for learning. There's a lot I could say about this situation, but, I will keep it brief. Sadly, many politicians, black leaders, and some parents have ruined predominantly black schools by creating an environment of excuses, fear, low performance and hostility. This teacher should had never been fired. But, because of the expected norm for these kids in this type of system, maybe she should had let them fight like ANIMALS. By the way, isn't that what they are?

  14. What are the parents, pastors, and leaders in Detroit doing to get her job back?

  15. i agree with your post. this system is broken. striking a child is not abuse….abusing a child is abuse – BIG difference. they should applaud her for trying to stop the fight. the teachers are so disempowered that students have no respect for rule or authority. then people wonder WHY they act so crazy when they enter the 'real' world as young adults. the prblem started years ago when parental authoritative power was taken and kids were given power through the ability to call everything abuse and report their own parents when corrected. the ripple effect is seen in schools. so, we have this massive population of undisciplined, untrained children & are surprised when they don't meet societal expectations of good citizenship. well, when were they ever taught it? when was it ever expected of them? this teacher should have beaten their tales with that broom & then their parents should have followed up with more of the same.

  16. When will teachers learn that they are not to intervene in fights. It’s a no win situation. Why does anyone want to teach anyway. The children are unruly, disruptive, and unmotivated. The parents defend all bad behavior. They are grossly underpaid and not respected. What’s the incentive?

  17. You made a valid point until you called OUR children animals. They are and will remain children. There are many parents who have not raised their children for at least two generations and we have not held Black children accountable for their actions for some time, that's for sure, but you stoop low when you call them animals. We are all responsible for the situation that exists today in our communities. We did not speak up when we could have made a difference.

  18. I'm sure any injuries the kids received were from the broom, not from the fight.

  19. Right!

  20. I mostly agree with Perplexed; however, “it’s a dirty job; somebody gotta do it”.

This is what happens when the Government takes prayer out of school and punishment out of the homes of citizens.

Lord, build a fence around my daughter and other teachers and my grandson who’s in the public school system.

  21. No, it's really "ANIMALS" like you OUR Children need to be safe guarded against. Go kick rocks.

  22. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

  23. Was the problem that she used a broom? Would it have been better that she cold cocked one of the kids? There is NOTHING right about this firing. Teachers union getting involved?

  24. Allblk ForReal You're calling me an animal because…..? Did that make you feel like a real man?

  25. I purposely placed that statement in my sentence about "animals" because I wanted to catch the intention of the reader. However, I do know this fact for sure, many people outside of our community see them as such. Thanks for reply,, and may we all stand strong in developing and growing the next generation to be great leaders in our community, nation, and world.

  27. So, if I offended anyone I apologize.
