McDonald’s is most well known for being the largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants in the world. It was started in 1940 as a family owned restaurant by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald and was then purchased by business Ray Kroc who originally joined the company as a franchise agent in 1955. Kroc eventually oversaw the worldwide expansion of the restaurant into a multi-billion dollar corporation. The corporation serves more than 68 million customers daily across 119 countries. Few expected a company that began as a restaurant opened by two brothers to become a fast-food pioneer in its implementation of assembly line style production to mass produce hamburgers and cheeseburgers by the millions. After decades of financial success, McDonald’s now employs more than 1.7 million people in more than 34,000 restaurants scattered across the globe.
McDonald’s international success has made the term “McDonaldization” synonymous with the term globalization. The Economist newspaper even uses a financial figure referred to as the “Big Mac Index” to compare the purchasing power of various currencies by comparing how much of a particular currency it takes to purchase a Big Mac.
One would think that the McDonald’s Corporations infiltration of cultures across the globe would make it impossible for the company to hide much about what goes on inside of it’s operations. However, the following video contains 10 shocking facts that will surprise and baffle. The video includes facts and figures about the global corporation that many will find shocking and even unnerving.
