The Washington Post is reporting that first lady Michelle Obama toured Howard University along with television host and rapper Bow Wow and 37 students from Chicago public high schools.  The school system refers to the college visit that students take annually as, “Escape to the Mecca,” which is supposed to be a play on the fact that Howard University’s nickname, “the Mecca.”

On an interesting note, Obama is said to have specifically requested that Bow Wow attend the event with her.  Bow Wow is a host on the popular BET show 106 & Park, which may be one of the reasons the first lady made the request.  The two met when Obama made an appearance on the show, and Obama is said to have grown fond of him.  She also stated that she chose him because of his commitment to education.  Obama has focused on education as one of her priorities while she has been first lady.  The two toured dorms in Frazier Hall with the students and also posed for pictures with students at Howard’s famous quad.

The Washington Post reports the first lady received greetings from students through dorm windows as she walked through the campus.  She spoke to the Chicago Public School students about the fact that high school is no longer the bar to meet in terms of educational achievement and that the new global economy requires that those who want to be competitive must seek a college degree.  The Washington Post reports that at least one student went ahead and paid her enrollment fee for the school on the day of the visit.  The student is quoted as saying that the day she spent with Obama and Bow Wow on Howard’s campus was the most amazing day of her life.
