Dillard University President Walter Kimbrough is not a punk. He’s a man of integrity and one who is willing to engage the world. He spoke last year in public when hip-hop star Dr. Dre made a massive donation of $70 million dollars to USC. The gift is a nice one and would go toward sustaining the school’s music program.
But Kimbrough asked Dre something that a lot of people might not like: “Why give the money to a big university that doesn’t need it when you could give it to a black university instead?”
Of course, there were those who felt that Kimbrough should have just shut his mouth and not said a word. But there are others who looked over and said, “Good question. Black people should help each other when they can.”
In this interview, you can hear Dr. Kimbrough speak in his own words, and it will also help you to understand where he was coming from when he made this bold request.
