Dillard University President explains why he had a bone to pick with Dr Dre

Post By RelatedRelated Post

Dillard University President Walter Kimbrough is not a punk.  He’s a man of integrity and one who is willing to engage the world.  He spoke last year in public when hip-hop star Dr. Dre made a massive donation of $70 million dollars to USC.  The gift is a nice one and would go toward sustaining the school’s music program.

But Kimbrough asked Dre something that a lot of people might not like:  “Why give the money to a big university that doesn’t need it when you could give it to a black university instead?”

Of course, there were those who felt that Kimbrough should have just shut his mouth and not said a word.  But there are others who looked over and said, “Good question.  Black people should help each other when they can.”

In this interview, you can hear Dr. Kimbrough speak in his own words, and it will also help you to understand where he was coming from when he made this bold request.

  1. Huh! What a small world…

  2. Listen if dr dre wanted to donate his millions to that specific university then so be it,who are u to jugde him in saying his not helpin other black men,and forget how MANY blackpeople ,artists he's helped make it to the top..artists like the game, snoop dogg, 2pac shakur..all these artists got to where they are by being helped by the hiphop doctor…so go pick on some1 who deserves to be picked on and leave then innocent hard workin men who actually donate rather than those who dont even care what happens to people who are not in his circle of friends…remember the bible said'' the way u judge others you will judge in the same manner''..before u start pointing a finger consider the ones pointing back at You!

  3. Dr. Kimbrough brings up great points, but I think one should take a step back to look at the specific issue instead of broadly addressing lack of adequate funding to HBCUs. People often give to schools that they are alums of or have some sort of deeper relationship with. Dr. Dre's gift was a partnership with Jimmy Iovine and was given to fund students who are going to major in digital media.

Additionally, this gives Dre/iovine a pipeline into up and coming talent to hire into their company, Beats by Dre. It's a business move, not a philantrophic one. Another issue to highight is that Dr. Dre doesn't have a direct connection to any HBCU. So why would a philantrophist give money to a school(s) that they have no relationship with? Would you do that? Probably not, so to expect Dre to do so just because his net worth in the nine figures is ridiculous.

I can understand where Dre is coming from. As soon as a brother gets money, other blacks run up in his face with their hands out expecting him to give them all his money. That guy is still in his prime and in the process of building wealth. While we can hold Dre accountable for not giving back more $$$ to Compton (even though he continue to put Compton rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Game on), I think attacking him on this issue is pretty weak.

  4. You seem to have some self hate issues, It's ok for the white college to have its hands out stretched, but it's wrong for the black college?

  5. Lay'Di Cleopatra really, that's what you took away from that post, self hate? LMAO

where did I indicate it was ok for any college to ask anyone for money? If you actually re-read the post, you will find my educated guess on why Dre and Iovine donated the money. USC has a huge endowment, they don't need any money and didn't ask Dre/Iovine for anything. The funds provided went to fund scholarships for digital media students, which will serve as a talent pipeline for their company, Beats by Dre. Please do your research on the actual donation before commenting.

You might also want to do some research on gifts to academic institutions and how they work. There is usually a connection via alumni, industry vertical, or family as to why someone gives to a school.

    Have a great day!!!

  6. See there's a stipulation that comes with these "stars", black ones exclusively getting all this money. They can buy all the bling they want, pop all the bottles in the clubs, make it rain on strippers, and of course purchase clothing, houses and cars without limits. That helps to make blacks look like they don't have a clue with what they should do with money. They can even help black people BUT they better live in Africa or some other Continent. The excuse the fans give is "they do a lot for black communities but do it secretly" Bull!!!! The moment you hear of one of them using their money to really help blacks in their community soon after you will read a story about Tax evasion or some other cockamamie happening with them.

  7. This is what happens when our people don't read REAL SH*T !!!!!! LOve , LOVE, LOVE this Professor- clearly it was a serious blow to our community – every thing in this article is spot on- Someone should take Dr Dre's beats & beat some sense into his short sighted , cave crittur privilge perpetuaing mindset!! for real!!!!!! Dre couldn't be where he's at without the credibility that is the substance beneath so called 'urbanised' flavour that comes directly from the support & struggles of our most down trodden but not beaten fortitude. In reality Dre is part of the 20th century Du Bois's 'talented tenth' that should be re-investing in our community- Du Bois had thought that percentage would come from education as opposed to entertainment & all those that made it in the industry need to recognise they did so on the backs & the behind the scenes support of the masses. WTF!!! IT is whitey's mentality that makes you believe Dre that we have no collective duty- we as Africans believe it takes a Village to raise a child- who are /were your core supporters if not the children of the village…???? seriously with all the billions them white folks like those rothchilds got – again from our lands & off of our ancestors -you mean as a descendant of a slave you're gonna make a gift that will more benefit your oppressors who have us shooting up each other… Seriously… don't give a rats behind about how much man you bought into you immediate circle, May the ancestors never give you a moment of peace until you realise & rectify – no -one of colour should ever by your sh^t from here on… SMH- wow! not only are u turning the other cheek I believeyou're bending down , grabbing ankles & offering those two other cheeks too!!! Yeah it's your money , yes you earned it but just like if you had food & children were starving & you chose to give your food to an overfed dog instead of a starving child because it's your food I'd have a MORALE right to call your ass out even if it is your food – hence am calling your singularly selfish, self profiting, self & whiteboy serving ass out!!!!!

    • @JADE SCORCHER….

You preach it Jade, but I say screw both Dre and Kimbrough, both are donkey-ass traders to our black community / aka: young black children, and Kimbrough flew with wings from Philander Smith College in Ark. where there was a very very serious sex scandle going down behind their demonic a$$’s exploiting young freshman black-women. Some of the young girls were recruited from the islands. Ask Kimbrough about his friend he hired and what went down at that school, and might I add it wasn’t long ago, so its still fresh. All of those filthy ba$tards can kick rocks taking their filthy lying perpertrating perverted a$$ and jump off a fkn cliff.

      All money ain’t good money….. / and talk is cheap!!! @Dre & Kimbrough (DOGS)…………….

  8. It's great to see that Dr. Kimbrough is still doing wonderful things. Arkansas really misses you!

    • I’m quite sure yall deep-southers are very very hungry for more perverted flavor, its like a bad drug, once you taste it “It Just Keeps On Coming”….

  9. This goes back to WEB DuBois' support for black colleges while working for desegregation. There's nothing wrong with proudly supporting ur people in the face of a sustained attack on education in general and the education of minorities in particular.

  10. The President should have kept his mouth shut. He did not do his homework. A day late a dollar short. He needed to contact Dr Dre and offer him something – not just have his hand out. A building named after Dr could have been the entree.

  11. We have to help each other! View The BlackMan(State of Emergency) on Youtube. Brotha(Dr. Dre) what were you thinking! Peace!

  12. *The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as a lot as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I really thought youd have something fascinating to say. All I hear is actually a bunch of whining about something which you could fix in case you werent too busy searching for attention.

  13. Actually instructive and fantastic structure of content material material , now that

  14. Do men and women nonetheless use these? Personally I really like gadgets but I do prefer something a bit more up to date. Nonetheless, nicely written piece thanks.
