Jermaine Jones and 10 other former black American Idol contestants are in a racial discrimination lawsuit. Jones is citing his disqualification from season 11 for having outstanding warrants in New Jersey, www.theroot.com reports.

“I was and continue to be appreciative of the opportunity to perform as a Top 10 contestant during Season 11 of ‘American Idol,’ which was once considered the world’s biggest stage for up-and-coming recording artists,” the 27-year old singer said in an exclusive statement to ABC News. “And I wanted to believe that my humiliating public disqualification in March 2012 was just part of the show and an experience that could be internalized and ultimately forgotten. But I realize now, with the support of my family and friends, that Equal Rights under the law (or in this case, under contest rules) is something we must always strive for and never take for granted.”

Freeman and ten (10) other Idol contestants have sought legal counsel from, James H. Freeman. Freeman filed a motion requesting permission to amend the lawsuit to include the New Jersey singer, who, according to ABC News, “has been dubbed the ‘gentle giant’ for his resonant baritone voice and 6’8” frame.”

Daniel Petrocelli, an attorney representing the FOX network, which broadcasts American Idol, and the show’s production company, 19 Entertainment, declined to comment, the news station reports.

Initially, Jones was quoted in February 2013 as saying that he wanted no part in the suit, although the plaintiffs said his disqualification had been emblematic of the show’s “pattern and practice” of discrimination against black males.

But a person familiar with Jones’ situation told ABC News that Jones at the time was still trying to determine whether to join the lawsuit.

Those purportedly suing include Corey Clark (season two), Jaered Andrews (season two), Jacob John Smalley (season two), Donnie Williams (season three), Terrell Brittenum (season five), Derrell Brittenum (season five), Thomas Daniels (season six), Akron Watson (season six), Ju’Not Joyner (season eight), and Chris Golightly (season nine). The contestants are claiming that the show illegally dug up arrest histories and used it to humiliate and defame the contestants on television.

  3. I’m white if that’s ok to say. I am happy to read that American Idol is getting some heat for their practices. I started out believing that the show was really about finding the best singing talent. But after they began kicking people off for old offenses and I do meet old. Well I began wondering especially when it was black males. Some of who could really sing quite well. I had for a time stopped watching when Simon made his remark about Southern singers especially singling out Alabama. So I have no problem believing that they would single out black males. Shouldn’t the issue about prior offenses be made well befor additions or at least befor the first live show?
