In an effort to get a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of Alfred Wright in Sabine County, TX, his family has started a petition on ColorofChange.org asking the Department of Justice, Texas Governor Rick Perry and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to make the investigation into Alfred Wright’s death and the ill-handling of his case by Sabine County Sheriff’s Department a priority.
Wright, a 29 year old husband and father of three children went missing early in November 2013. He reportedly called his wife from a package store in Sabine County, TX and reported that his truck had stopped on him while en route to a physical therapy patient’s residence. His wife, Lauren, sent his parents out to help him, but when they arrived, Alfred Wright could not be found anywhere, although his truck remained parked at the store. His wife attempted to call him and on one of the calls she reports hearing what sounded like her husband in distress. Repeated calls to his phone afterwards were not answered. The store clerk told his parents that she had last seen Wright stuff his cellphone into his sock and take off running.
The local sheriff’s office searched for Alfred Wright, but after three days called off their search saying they had exhausted all their resources. However, Wright’s family put together their own volunteer search party to look for him. They covered the same areas the law enforcement claimed to have searched and they found his body in a field approximately three weeks after his disappearance.
Alfred Wright’s body was found wearing a pair of blue underwear, one sock and one shoe. Inside of the sock was his cellphone. His body, according to his family, appeared to have been neatly laid in the area in which it was found, but he was missing his eyes, an ear, some teeth and his tongue. His body also had a cut into his throat.
The State autopsy revealed that the cause of death was “accidental” and caused by drug intoxication but made no mention of the missing body parts or the cut to his throat. The Wright family requested an independent autopsy in which it was determined that Wright may have experienced a head injury and neck injury which is indicative of a homicide.
The family is now more certain than ever that there is a cover up by local authorities in the demise of Alfred Wright. They solicited the help of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee to get the Department of Justice (DOJ) involved. Although there were earlier reports that the DOJ had agreed to look into the case, o date, no one from the DOJ has questioned anyone in the Wright family about the case and findings.
The area in which Wright’s body was found was just 45 minutes away from the site of another highly publicized, racially-induced tragedy, the beating and dragging demise of James Byrd. Public pressure on the federal government led to the three convictions in the demise of James Byrd.
