Louisiana State Police are investigating the mysterious death of Victor White, III who local police alleged shot himself while he was handcuffed in the back of an Iberia Parish Sheriff officer’s vehicle this past Sunday.
According to various reports, Police responded to a 911 call around 11:22am where they arrested White who was reportedly fighting with “others” in the 300 block of Lewis Street.
After a brief search, deputies found illegal drugs on White, so they handcuffed and put him in the back of a squad car. They then transported him to police headquarters and that is when the details of this case get a little bit sketchy.
In a press release issued by the Sheriff’s department, Trooper 1st Class Stephen Hammons said, “Once at the Sheriff’s Office, White became uncooperative and refused to exit the deputy’s patrol vehicle.”
While the arresting officer called for backup help, they alleged that White produced a handgun and fired one round, striking himself in the back.
White, who was only 22 years old, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local area hospital.
Rev. Raymond Brown, president of National Action Now, reached out to Your Black World stating that his organization plans to look into the shooting death of White. He said in a statement, “We think that the Deputy or Deputies who killed Mr. White, planted a gun on him and then called for backup.” He further stated, “Something is seriously wrong with this picture.”
Rev. Raymond Brown and his organization plan to hold a news conference on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Iberia Parish Courthouse in Iberia Louisiana.
Other organizations, such as the NAACP is also looking into this matter.
For now, Hammons states that they are investigating how White was able to get a gun. He stated, “It’s too early in our investigation to comment further.”
