You know how we were told to keep our hands to ourselves as children? Well, apparently Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and his fiancée Janay Palmer didn’t receive that memo.
According to ESPN.com, the pair were arrested over the weekend and charged with simple assault. Sources say that they fought each other in an Atlantic City casino after a disagreement of some sort. The arresting police reported that Rice and his fiancée Janay A. Palmer “struck each other with their hands” at the Revel Casino. Cops were called to the scene at 2:51 a.m., but both refused medical attention, and no injuries were reported.
Although both Rice and Palmer reportedly tried to downplay the violence, witnesses reported that it was not a “minor incident”. An unidentified person who saw the altercation at Revel claimed that Rice hit Palmer “like he punched a guy, knocked down and dragged her out of the elevator by her feet” before security arrived at the scene. Another source added that Palmer spit on Rice which resulted in him upper cutting her and knocking her completely unconscious, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Apparently, the whole incident was captured on camera. After reviewing surveillance footage it appeared both parties were involved in a physical altercation,” the police statement said which resulted in the pair receiving the same charges. Unfortunately, this is not the type of activity that adults, and particular an NFL player should be engaging in. It could be extremely damaging to his family, but also very detrimental to his livelihood.
There will undoubtedly be court dates and hearings in the aftermath of this incident and Rice, 27 has a lot to lose. He signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the Ravens before the 2012 season. He is coming off his worst season with the team, gaining 660 rushing yards and averaging a career-low 3.1 yards per carry.
On Sunday, the Ravens released a statement about the incident saying, “We are aware of the Friday night situation with Ray Rice and his fiancée. We have spoken with Ray, and know that they returned home together after being detained.”
Rice or Palmer has yet to release an official statement on their behalf.
The couple share a young daughter so for her sake, let’s hopes that they get some counseling and are able to put this incident behind them.
