Niki Zoe Vickers is an up and coming fashion designer who has recently relocated to Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn seems to be a creative haven for black artists whether they actually were born and/or grew up there or whether they were attracted to the city by its charm and apparent haven for artistry and creativity.
Vickers used to work in corporate America, but decided to pursue a career in fashion, and she apparently feels that Brooklyn can serve as the space she needs to continue to grow and flourish while pursuing her dreams. In a recent eurweb.com article, Vickers attributes her interest in fashion to her grandmother who use to take her shopping at thrift stores as a regular Saturday errand. These weekly outings with her grandmother have influenced her unique style of bright colors, funky tights, furry vests, and other mismatched pairings.
Vickers is being noticed by more than just her peers who want to copy her style these days. In preparation for her transition from the corporate world to the world of fashion, she established a network of fashion experts and stylists in New York to help her launch her career into new territory.
When asked about celebrities she has already worked with, Vickers says that her first styling gig was working with The Cool Kids. Her work for Wiz Khalifa seems to be what jump started her career, and she says that working with Samuel L Jackson for a magazine cover shoot has been one of her favorite experiences this far.
Vickers seems to be settling into Brooklyn with ease. She has been a founding member of Indigo Hippie CO which is a collective of Brooklynites all pursuing their own creative interests with passion and imagination. Although she is still considered a newbie in the industry, she is starting to leave her mark. Those interested in tracking her progress should keep an eye out for an event series she is launching this summer that will incorporate, photography, fashion, and other creative interests.
