Recently at a New York Film Critic’s Circle Award, Steve McQueen, who is the director in the film 12 Years a Slave received an award and was heckled.
McQueen, received the Best Director award and during his speech, he began to get heckled by film critic Armond White. White, who yelled that McQueen was “an embarrassing doorman and garbage man.” He also said, “F–k you. Kiss my ass.”
Slate critic Dana Stevens was also seated at White’s table, and wrote that the critic and guest were “drunk and heckling at a lesser level the whole time.”
McQueen who accepted the award from Harry Belafonte, seems unfazed by the remarks and didn’t address them.
White has also reacted to the reports of his behavior. ”The barrage of lies, misreporting, unsubstantiated sources and made-up quotes is dismaying,” White said. “The awards themselves, and the highlights of the evening, such as James Toback and Peter Bogdanovich’s praise for best-picture winner American Hustle, have been forgotten in the melee.”
White is notorious for being a harsh critic, and apparently this is not the first time he has resorted to heckling his peers in the industry.
