Poor lighting? Bad make-up? Wrong angle? These are some of the questions that some are asking about Basketball Wives star, Tami Roman. These individuals are giving Tami the benefit of the doubt and are hoping that indeed she has not done what some have accused her of: skin bleaching.
In recent pictures that have gone viral, Tami looks drastically different. Naturally beautiful, the caramel brown reality TV star appears to be several hues lighter than she normally appears. Reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s transformation, some are wondering what is really going on and in true fashion, people have taken to social media to weigh in.
Some have defended Roman and truly believe that the outspoken mother, who was a pioneer on MTV’s Real World, would never bleach her skin. Others have pointed to the pressure that some Black women feel to become more desirable. Unfortunately, for some, that includes doing whatever it takes to lighten one’s skin.
Skin lightening has long been used by some women of color around the world from America, Brazil to Senegal and England to achieve a ‘standard’ of beauty that often evokes cries of self-hatred and destruction. It has become some bad in some places that advocates want to ban skin-lightening, especially creams and chemicals that are made from mercury.
It is too soon to tell what is really happening with Tami. Recently, Indie Arie was thought to have bleached her skin when a picture went public that showed her several shades lighter. India was quick to denounce her critics and shortly thereafter, it became evident that it was the lighting.
Tami has yet to address the rumors directly, but she did take to social media to dismiss her critics. She tweeted, “Don’t believe the hype.”
For those of us who embrace Black as beautiful in all of its hues, we are hoping that indeed the rumor of skin-bleaching is not true.
