Actor Jaimie Fox held a celebrity fundraiser at his home this past weekend in the honor of Trayvon Martin. Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, Martin’s parents, attended the gathering. There were many celebrities at the event including the famous Harry Belafonte, Russell Simmons, Tyrese and many more. Extra reported that Harry Belafonte gave a speech at the party. Russell Simmons delivered a big six-figure check to Martin’s parents that will go to the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
The foundation was recently launched by Martin’s parents to honor their son who was shot dead by “neighborhood watchman” George Zimmerman last February of 2012. The shooting led the way to a racially explosive case. Despite a lot of criminalizing evidence, Zimmer was later acquitted of all of his charges even though there was no question that he shot the 17 year-old boy.
The goal of the foundation according to its website is to create awareness through a non-profit organization about the impact of violent crimes on the victim’s family. It also provides support and advice for how families can deal with the negative impact of violence on them.
The actor, singer and comedian Jaime Foxx has been vocal about the case since it exploded into the headlines. Foxx has spoken out countless times about his support for the Martin family and he promises through events like this to keep the young man’s memory alive. He surely doesn’t want Martin’s name to be forgotten either. Foxx said earlier in the year he was completely shocked by the entire incident and that he “couldn’t get over it.” Fox himself is the father of an 18 year-old girl and felt a connection, as did many parents, with the Martin tragedy. He said he wishes for no parent ever to ever go through something like this.
