Will.I.Am Thinks that Pharrell Has Been Stealing Ideas for a Very Long Time

Post By RelatedRelated Post

Will.i.am isn’t happy with Pharrell and is showing it in a recent lawsuit filed, accusing him of copyright infringement.  This has got to be a hit to the hitmaker’s reputation, since Pharrell is known for coming up with some of the most original work in the industry.  But this is the second major lawsuit of this nature to hit him, since he is also being accused of doing the same thing with his summer hit, “Blurred Lines.”

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Will.i.am thinks that Pharrell’s “I Am Other” brand is “confusingly similar” to the “I AM” brand owned by Will.  He might have a point, since we’re already confused.

Will sent a cease and desist letter, demanding that Pharrell stop using “I AM.” Pharrell filed a lawsuit, asking a judge to protect his right to use the “I AM” moniker.

According to TMZ: “In new legal docs, Will.i.am is countersuing Pharrell, claiming the dude has a long, copycat history. Will.i.am notes … Pharrell co-founded a record label called Star Trak Entertainment — sound familiar?

But wait, there’s more. Will also notes Pharrell is being sued by singer Marvin Gaye’s family for allegedly ripping off “Got to Give it Up” for his summer smash “Blurred Lines.”

As for using “I AM,” Will points out it will confuse people because they’re both on the same record label and they have similar musical styles.”

It is unclear how the lawsuits are impacting the producers’ friendship, however Pharrell told Rolling Stone in June he was disappointed by Will.i.am’s actions.

“I am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me. I am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions. I am surprised in how this is being handled and I am confident that Will’s trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and ridiculous as I do [sic].”

  2. What does he think …that everyone who jamed 2 "Got 2 Get It Up" is 6ft under….HELL 2 THE NA!!!…We R still here..live & kick'n & know the groove very well thax U!!!

  3. Ditto!

  4. Blurred Lines is a hit because of Mr. Marvin Gaye's original track Got to Give It Up…Shame on Mr. Pharrell and Mr. Thicke trying to pass this off as an original work…

  5. Pherrell is a beat jacker as well as that fake R+B he is trying to give credibility to in the form of a so called ghetto pass (whatever that is ) by performing with him.

  6. It is clear that Pharrell and Thicke stole the Blurred lines beat from Marvin Gaye. For them to try and say otherwise is a joke!!!!

  7. When I first heard "Blurred Lines" thought it was Got to give it up. The only artist original are Will.I.AM, Stevir Wondor, etc…I only listen to old stuff anyway. Because their too many copycats Beyoncé' they all copy today.

  8. Who cares they’re both crap.

  11. This is so sad on every level! I hope justice prevails.

  12. Sorry sack of alleged song thieves…..When you hear blurred lines you hear, Marvin Gaye’ Got To Give It Up.!! Stop lying a pay up. This is sad. 🙁

  13. I can understand margin gays family for trying to make money, but wil I am is a disgrace, his song with a banjo. Playing in it I have heard that melody. Many years ago, I think it’s called blue grass music on the country and western side of the industry, and if you listen carefully there is. A mixture of prince and parliament featuring George Clinton In his songs, pharrells song is a prince rip off but they are all stealing. Bits here and there, the record company wants hit records that’s all it’s industry standard will I am is just jealous because pharell. Is just as popular as him if not the main man and working with mile rogers is a clever move

  14. Pharrell. Has been stealing it’s nothing new it’s hard to write a song completely fresh even the rolling stone stole from chuck berry

  15. What people have to understand is that
Music publishers have the last say so it’s a win win situation for record company, publisher, writer ect one thing is for sure the record company and publisher always wins No matter how artist fight each other, what I would like pharrell and wil I am to do is to get into the music distribution. Side of things that where the real power and profits are Also total record company ownership not a sub of a existing major label

  16. I hear you. The little wheel goes where the big wheel is!

  17. On another note does anyone know who owns there copywrites. I know that Warner Chappell music and others own millions of songs

  18. That's the sad thing about a thief…If he'll steal once he'll steal again and the Blurred Lines is Marvin Gaye all the way. I remember jamming off "Got to Give It Up" before Pharrell was born.

  19. I am a fan of them both! But this shit has been going on forever! Everything repeats big up to pharrell! I still Love u!!! Quit acting like a baby Will I am!!!!

  20. Has anyone ever heard of imitation is the greatest form of flattery?

  21. Umm… Ya'll know it was replayed right? It wasn't sampled. Its not even exactly the same… It just feels like the same song (…I think the cowbell got everybody). You can't sue somebody for that! I think it was done in respect and tribute to the original.
