Kanye West may have found a new hustle to pay for the recent (felony) attempted robbery charge: Slangin’ t-shirts. West’s newly announced clothing line with French fashion design company A.P.C. has hit store shelves and is selling quite well. One particular item that caught the attention of the media was a plain white t-shirt, described as a “Hip Hop T-Shirt,” that was retailing for the exorbitant price of $120.
Despite the high price tag and the fact that there are no visible stylistic differences in the shirt to differentiate it from others with more reasonable prices, it still sold out upon its debut. The only thing that slightly signifies its uniqueness is the unseen silk screened words “A.P.C. by Kanye” on the inner neckline where most tags are located. The collection also included hoodies and jeans retailing for $280 and $265 respectively, which sold out almost instantly as well.
A similar incident occurred last year when Gwenyth Paltrow released her collaborative clothing line with designer Kain Label, in addition to her own personal clothing company GOOP. What article of clothing in the collection got the most attention? A plain white t-shirt that was selling for $90.
So in just a little over a year’s time, two major celebrities released overpriced clothing lines that featured ridiculously overpriced t-shirts that were immediately snatched up by fashion enthusiasts. None of the products were devoid of any defining characteristics that would imply that any actual designing went into the creation of the clothing.
