I had the opportunity to tune into BET’s new series ‘Being Mary Jane.’ My thoughts were, “not bad.” The star line-up includes Gabrielle Union, Omari Hardwick and Lisa Vidal. Gabrielle Union plays a Successful black woman, single of course, and going through a midlife crisis. She’s dating married men, having booty calls, and masturbating in her office, you know ‘all that sista sh*t.’
As hard as writers strive to step outside the box with the character development of the ‘black woman’, so often we are still marginalized as powerful, but not marriageable. We’re intelligent, but not marriageable. Did you know that statistics show that the African American woman is the least desired woman in the world? African American men have the choice to date any woman in any race, but not the African American woman.
Find the time and watch BET’s new series, ‘Being Mary Jane’. The writers of the show, made it very clear that ‘this story is not every black woman’s story, it is the story of one black woman-Mary Jane.
Being Mary Jane proved a winner for BET last night. The show’s 90-minute premiere Tuesday was the highest-rated show on cable and the second highest-rated program on TV with a 2.0 rating. Only NBC’s America’s Got Talent did better in adults 18-49 last night with its 2.3 rating.
This is a story to which millions of modern women will both relate and respond. Mary Jane Paul is a one-woman machine: a successful TV news anchor, and an entirely self-sufficient powerhouse who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. Intense drama and unforgettable moments unfold as Mary Jane juggles her life, her relationships, her work and commitments to her family.
