Tyler Perry’s ‘Peeples’ Does Horribly at the Box Office

Tyler Perry seemed like the director where everything he touched turned to gold. But that seems to just be everything he touches while wearing a dress.  His new film, “Peeples” didn’t do so well at the box office, hauling in a flimsy $4.8 million for the opening weekend.  This was far below the expectations for the film, which may not be a money maker for the super wealthy Mr. Perry.

The film starred Kerry Washington, who seemed to bring star power, along with David Alan Grier.  It also featured the directorial debut of Tina Gordon Chism.   On average, Perry’s films earn over $20 million during their opening weekend, making this one a huge disappointment.  But Perry’s films have earned over $400 million worldwide, but maybe a lot less when Tyler isn’t dressed like a woman.

The film cost both Perry and Lionsgate $15 million for production and distribution, so it’s hard to say that they are going to get their money back.   But Kerry is going to be fine, with her major roles in “Django Unchained” and the hit TV show, “Scandal.”

Maybe part of the reason the film did horribly is because every black person on earth was going to see Iron Man 3.  Here’s the list:

1. “Iron Man 3,” $72.5 million ($89.3 million international).

2. “The Great Gatsby,” $51.1 million.

3. “Pain and Gain,” $5 million.

4. “Peeples,” $4.9 million.

5. “42,” $4.7 million.

6. “Oblivion,” $3.9 million ($11.7 million international).

7. “The Croods,” $3.6 million ($17.3 million international).

8. “The Big Wedding,” $2.5 million ($2 million international).

9. “Mud,” $2.4 million.

10. “Oz the Great and Powerful,” $802,000.

  1. This Movie got bad reviews from the start many critics called it another meet the Parents with no substances.Tyler Perry is obviously a great producer and director but I think in order for him too be reconize and taken seriously for his talent he has too get away from Movies like this

  2. I enjoy TP movies just like the next person but when he releases them out back to back, it loses it’s twang, sometimes, I think. Spread them out a bit, it’s like he’s running a marathon of movies ventures and now he has two new shows coming on OWN, slow down and put out quality not quantity.

  3. The previews turned off his followers. People want to see what Tyler is known for not Kerry awashington trying to pretend to be a sister. After Tyler forced that Kardasian girl down our throats what does he expect?

    • Honestly I was completely turned off by the fact that the woman that plays the "who're wench" to the white man was cast in T.P.'s film. I am NOT a fan of Kerry Washington at all and I will NEVER support scandal. So I was purely annoyed that she was cast. I do love Craig Robinson and I wanted to support him so I went to see it.

  4. I went to a pre screening a few days before it came out, and it was actually pretty good. I did notice that it wasn't advertised as well as the previous films, and Iron Man and The Great Gatsby were too much competition for Peeples. It's also important to note that Tyler Perry is only in the title of this movie. He didn't write or direct it. Plus there was no Madea in it.

  5. When I saw the previews of this movie, I immediately though about 'Jumping the Broom.' The plot was similar. Someone else wrote that TP is releasing projects back-to-back and needs to slow down, I don't agree with that, but I do agree with the comment that we need quality and not quantity projects from TP. There are so many talented UNKNOWN writers that need attention. Perhaps instead of another writtten by, produced by, directed by TP, he should be searching for more talent ALL OVER. He is in a position to do so. His name does not have to be written on everything all the time.

  6. you do realize he didnt make this film right. he didnt write OR produce this film. he simply gave almost free production to a friend, who has not dont anything since 2006, free production to make a film.

so you sitting here bashing him and placing blame on him for something he didnt do really makes you sound like a very bitter female. a bitter female hiding behind a keyboard and nobody even knows, or likely cares who you are.

  7. Since TP didn’t write or produce the film then maybe he shouldn’t have had his name all over it like he did. How sad that the lady that did write and direct this movie got a quicke mention at the very end of the commercial but TP’s name was mentioned throughout the commercial.

  8. Simply put…….the trailer just didn’t look interesting enough to go see the movie. Meet the Parents and Jump the Broom were decent movies which was enough for me.

  9. Didn’t like the trailer, it did not make me want to go see the movie.

  10. If a brother wasn't out their trying to put an interested movie together you would be complaining. I haven't gone to see it yet gut I will soon If it's have a good plot I will like it. Holding my comments until later.

  11. I saw the movie…."hated it".

  12. I saw it and found each character to be interesting, current with a purpose. I really enjoyed this movie.

  13. It didn’t do well because it was publicized as a T. Perry movie.
