Now on her list of accolades, you can add “Harvard Law Honorary graduate.” Oprah Winfrey was in tears as she received the award of a lifetime from the prestigious institution. Winfrey deserved the reward for her long list of lifetime achievements. She also received it for being the commencement speaker for this year’s graduating class.
But Harvard isn’t out of the racism fire with this award. The school has a horrible record of not giving tenure to African American female law professors. Thus far, only two black women have been granted tenure in the school’s nearly 200-year history, with one of them coming recently after the school was criticized during the appointment of former Harvard Law dean Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. In six years as Dean at Harvard, Kagan did not hire a single black, native American, or Latino law professor. In contrast, the school has granted tenure to hundreds of white male professors. So, maybe Oprah’s voice can be used to change the racism at a law school that can never be the best in the country as long as they continue to exclude such a vast pool of talented legal minds.
Oprah Winfrey received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University, on Thursday.
The media mogul was obviously deeply touched by the commendation as she accepted the law degree with a few tears brimming in her eyes on the famous campus grounds in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The honour was bestowed upon the 59-year-old talk show host just hours before she was scheduled to give the featured commencement speech for the graduating class of 2013.
