The New Orleans police have identifies and apprehended the suspect in the Mother’s Day Parade Shooting. The shooter was 19 year old Akein Scott.
Scott decided to go on a shooting spree last Sunday which left 19 people wounded. Fortunately, there were no causalities. This news was first announced on the New Orleans Police Department’s Facebook page, which featured a big bold “CAPTURED!” on the picture of the suspect. Authorities said that would in deed provide more details on the arrest during a news conference set to take place today.
As mentioned in an earlier article, the suspect was caught in action on a surveillance video from a camera that was facing the scene of the shooting. The video depicted the crowd helplessly running from the direction of the fired bullets. Some were even seen falling to the ground as they were shot or trampled by fleeing people.
Scott was shown in the video wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants. After completing his shooting rant he was seen fleeing the scene. Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas stated Monday that the young man in the surveillance video had been identified by numerous of sources as the potential gunman.
Initially the Superintendent said it was far too early to know whether or not Scott was the suspect. This was because earlier police had announced that there were possibly three gunmen involved, and at least two different weapons used to commit the crime.
What was supposed to be a fun event with people parading through the streets, dancing as a live brass band followed behind the progressions turned into unplanned dangerous account. An account that left ten men, seven women, and two children (one boy and one girl) both age 10 to suffer from graze wounds. There was a $10,000 reward from anyone who provided information that led to the arrest of Scott.
The New Orleans police previously stated that Scott had an arrest record that involved drug and weapon charges. Court records even show that some of Scott’s charges have been dropped. He was also facing a felony charge of illegally carrying a weapon while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The Mother’s Day shooting perpetrator was scheduled for a court hearing for charges related to the felony case this Thursday. It wasn’t at first clear if he would be present for the hearing, but I guess he has no choice now since he is now in police custody.
