Although going back to their poverty-strikened communities to hand out toys and turkeys during the holiday is a good effort, it’s seldom to find a rapper who’s interested in making a financial contribution to education.
In hopes of saving $28 million per year, the Philadelphia School District announced it will be closing 37 schools in 2013. Maybach Music’s Meek Mill received word of the forthcoming closings and has pledged to donate $10,000 to his alma mater, Strawberry Mansion High School. In addition to the financial contribution, he is donating Puma basketball shoes to the school. The school is one of the 37 that will likely be closed in 2013.
Meek Mill took to his Twitter to vent about the closings: “37 schools being closed in Phill…gone b the worst thing 2 happen 2 Philly,” he tweeted. Meek Mill seems to believe the closings will have a negative social impact on the youth. “They about to close down 37 schools in Philly….They gone have kids from different hoods going 2 school in different hoods #problems,” the rapper continued.
