The (Ree)lationship Guide: Hollywood Wedding Pokes Fun at Homelessness
by Ree, “The (Ree)lationship Guide”
The media has been abuzz about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s lavish $6.5 million Italian wedding. The cost of the wedding itself is, surprisingly, not the source of the media buzz. Justin and Jessica are known for their charitable work, but Justin’s real estate agent/colleague may have ruined the couple’s charitable image.
As an introduction to the couple’s wedding, Justin Huchel showcased a video titled “Greetings From Your Hollywood Friends Who Just Couldn’t Make It.” The 20-second clip for the 8 minute recording opens with a homeless man saying “Jessica and Justin, I haven’t seen y’all in a long time. My gift is in the mail.” The next person is a transexual male telling the couple, “Good luck and watch your man [chuckles].” The last person in the 20-second clip is a shirtless homeless man saying: “Justin, Jessica, it’s me, Robert.”
A description from Gawker.com goes into depth about the video and also has the video for your viewing:
The 8:30 video featured street interviews with ten people, many of them obviously homeless, premised on the idea that they were friends of Timberlake and Biel’s who, for whatever reason, couldn’t quite swing the trip to the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia for the nuptials, which were reported to cost $6.5 million. “Greetings from Your Hollywood Friends Who Just Couldn’t Make It,” reads the opening title card, “Featuring Sid, Chuck, Robert, and More!” Sid, Chuck, Robert, and others appear to be penniless and living on the street. Some of them are obviously intoxicated, mentally ill, or both, and at least one of them is entirely incapable of speaking. –Source
Gawker also revealed a letter from Justin Huchel’s attorneys, threatening to sue for the release of the video:
The video—that’s a 20-second excerpt above—was shown to guests at the wedding, according to Huchel’s attorney, who threatened a lawsuit when Gawker approached Huchel for comment (the letter from his lawyer is below): “Mr. Huchel made [the] video to be used and exhibited privately at Justin Timberlake’s wedding as a private joke without Mr. Timberlake’s knowledge.” –Source
Many are criticizing the couple and their friend for revering the video as a “joke.” It saddens me how insensitive wealthy people can be towards those who face economic hardship; however, all persons involved in the video (excluding the mentally ill) seem to be well aware of the joke they’re participating in.
Do you believe the couple should be criticized for the video?
