Mrs. Obama Wins, Mrs. Romney Loses Cookie Contest

Family Circle’s Presidential Cookie Bake-Off has declared a winner and it is First Lady Michelle Obama. The Family Circle’s Presidential Cookie Bake-Off has been a general election tradition since 1992.

Mrs. Obama’s delicious White and Dark chocolate-chip cookie recipe won over voters in the competition with GOP rival Ann Romney’s M&M’s cookie recipe. Out of the over 9,000 total votes, the First Lady got 51.5% and Mrs. Romney’s got 48.5% of the votes.

Family circle pointed out that it was the closest competition since 1992, saying ,

“Just 287 votes separated the two women, our smallest margin ever. In other words, Ann Romney’s M&M’s cookies were no flash in the pan.”

The first lady used a recipe fondly called “the perfect special treat” from Eleanor ‘Mama Kaye’ Wilson who is her two daughters’ Godmother. The recipe uses both Crisco and two sticks of butter as well as some mint chips.

Along with her submission, the First Lady wrote,

“Every evening, Barack and I sit down for a family dinner with good conversation and healthy food. If we want to splurge, these White and Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies, created by the girls’ godmother, are the perfect special treat.”

During the voting period, Mrs. Obama, who is great at campaigning, encouraged voters to cast their votes at her Twitter account, tweeting:

 ”Check out a favorite Obama family cookie recipe–then cast your vote in @FamilyCircle’s Presidential Cookie Bake-Off”

Since 1992, the Family Circle Bake-Off has predicted the winner of the elections. With the exception of Mrs. Obama’s lemon zest shortbread cookies in 2008, every winning candidates wife has gone on to become the First Lady.

In November we will find out if the “cookie test” has proven to be an accurate predictor for 2012.
