Harvard Rejects Jay-Z As A Business Role-Model
If there’s one thing everyone knows about hip-hop mogul/entrepreneur Jay-Z, it is that he is an expert in all matters regarding business.
The drug dealer -turned rapper – entrepreneur is one of the wealthiest men in the world. Forbes claimed he and Beyoncé Knowles’ combined incomes equate to a billion dollars. With all of this being said, it’s no surprise that many people revere Jay-Z as a business role model… Everyone except Harvard University that is.
In 2005, Chanequa Campbell, a freshman at Harvard University, completed a profile for an on-campus recruiting program in which she listed Jay-Z as her business role-model. Campbell was promptly called into the Office of Career Services and told to replace Jay-Z with another business role-model. ”It’s not appropriate. I don’t think people will respond well to this,” the career counselor told her. Campbell grew up seven blocks from Jay-Z in Brooklyn and refused to replace his name for another business role-model. After some back and forth with the counselor, Campbell agreed to use Jay’s legal name, Sean Carter, instead.
Campbell was later kicked out of Harvard and still gets upset discussing the lack of respect the school gave to her idol. ”I know his resume,” Campbell said. “He made most of his major respect—Wall Street respect—since ’04. Hov [another nickname for Carter] started as an independent artist with Reasonable Doubt in 1996. Even though he wasn’t going platinum, at the beginning he was making money because he owned his own label, he was his own business.” Campbell continued: “That’s why I love Hov. He’s a prime example of how they can’t hold the past against you.”
It’s obvious that Harvard got it wrong about Jay-Z. Campbell has bounced back from her legal troubles and is teaching in New York City. She’s thinking about working at a think tank and is also writing a memoir.

Jay Z is a brand not a business man in the sense that Donald Trump is a business man. So, no he doesnt meet the Harvard Business model. His popularity has brought great opportuinities to his door by BUSINESS folks looking to capitalize off of his brand with his lawyers helping him with the best way to build his brand. So, thats where it gets gray.
Jay-Z may have been a drug dealer and so what, look where he has come from to be the man that he is today. There are many on Wall Street with checkered pasts. While I don’t revel in the fact that he made money castigating brothers, denigrating women and perpetuating negativity of the race in some of his lyrics/music, I will say the Brother is SMART. The Brother has taken the Business Model which involves goals: i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Target Driven. The brother created his own Record Label to market his product and did well enough to attract the major Record Labels for Worldwide Distribution, and has since created other businesses with Brand Marketing and Loyalty. He may not have that College Degree but was able to accomplish more than college trained persons because he has “Mother’s Wit and Common Sense.” By the way, Drug dealing is a business, though illegal, every sense of the word. It’s a business that involves, product, personnel, marketing, distribution, profit and loss, etc. So while Harvard may not consider him “Their Role Model”, he’s garner much respect from one of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffet, he sees his worth and impact on the community. Bravo to the Brother and all the rest, take a hike.
sorry charleston but i disagree, donald also needed his lawyers to help him. he has filed bankruptcy 2 to avoid being broke, second his money came from his dad , jay-z made his own money ! jay had his own label trump daddys money, jay-z no bankrupt’s on his record donald a few, so u really think jay-z is not a business man , than who does qualify ?
Like someone said … a hustle is a hustle. At least he knew how to get out the drug business and do something legal … and not become a drug addict! To h**l with Harvard! he dont need them!
Who cares..ohio state still sucks..GoBlue

I’m NOT a Harvard fan, but they are correct in wanting to choose some one who climbed to the top in business with a true sense or appearence of having worked hard (old fashion style) with a smigen of morals. They DO NOT want their children to follow in Jay-Z’s footsteps. Notice NO former white male meth dealers are held up in public as a role model for white/anglo guys. Jay-Z or Sean Carter is a great role model for using & hurting your own to climb to the top of ultimate selfishness. Also, the REAL BUSINESS SHARKS (N.Y. business groups & others) JUST uses Jay-Z or his brand to make themselves money which contributes to their wealth ,their family’s
status and keeps the rich (associates, friends, company, etc.) being as the top 1 or 2 percent of America. NO BLACKS ALLOWED !!!
